I think both The Saint and James Bond have a lot in common, even in love.

Both were ladies men, but as far as I can tell both fell in love twice. Bond with Vesper in Casino Royale and Diana Rigg in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, then Templar in the Louis Hayword 1938 Hollywood movie The Saint In New York and in the Roger Moore series with Margaret Siad, in The Saint Sees It Through.

No surprise that all four girls were killed off by the last reel

The film makers always kill off the girlfriends both on screen and tv. It gives the male lead an air of tragic nobility, or something.

I can't remember how many women Starsky and Hutch sent to an early demise by falling in love with them (and they were always called Nancy for some reason).

Who doesn't love a lead with a tragic romantic past?

George Carter in The Sweeney - wife was murdered by Dr Who.

Apparently the actress asked for more money - foolish girl.

I was under the impression that the writers wanted to make Carter a widow so he could socialise more with Regen, like double dating.

Sorry to disagree with you, Wicked Lady, but as to Stephanie Turned being foolish, she didn't do to bad, landing the lead in another cop show Juliet Bravo. If she made a mistake, it was leaving that show when it still had a couple of yrs left in it to run.

    No problem.

I'm only going by the commentary track on The Sweeney DVD set where Dennis Waterman, et al were discussing her departure. According to said discussion she was ousted for asking for more as she was a reccuring role (and I'm not saying for a minute she was wrong to ask). The response from the producers was apparently a curt : 'Kill her off then'. And over the bonnet of the car she went.

I can't say I've heard of Juliet Bravo although I'm glad she wasn't unemployed for long.

Juliet Bravo was like a small scale Prime Suspect, as it was one of, if not the first Brit cop show to have a woman as a senior police officer, in this case an Inspector of small town Station

    Hi,

During the late 1950's and early 1960's, this idea was fashionable. I am not saying it was original. But I think it possibly had to do with the fact that in a series could be spoilt or end if a happy ever after romance happened. Flint McColough in Wagon Train for example fell passionately in love at least twice. Each time the girl met a tragic end. I am not sure how many times Bronco Lane had a romance, but there was one story where both Bronco and the girl said goddbye for no apparent reason.

Some characters have had successful marriages, such as Maigret. Tarzan has had Jane. Although their romance and marriage and alternative versions are too intricate to go into detail here. But I will say, that during the making of the first Tarzan film, Edgar Rice Burroughs was not happy with the choice of Enid Markey, cinema's first Jane. So much so, he lost interest in the character and decided to kill her off in the book series. The publisher asked him if he was wise, and his wife said,"Oh! Non you don't!" So he never. But did come close to it. Oddly enough many years later in the sound era Maureen O'Sullivan wished to quit as Jane. MGM killed her off. But then had to refilm the ending due to pressure from the fans. Edgar Rice Burroughs was also upset at this and even turned pale when he heard what was originally intended.

    Alan French.
