English actor Michael Collins, (May 1921-24 Dec 1979) who played Jeff Langley in The Newcomers on BBC TV (1965) and the ship’s Captain in Alistair MacLean’s Bear Island (1979), superbly dubbed the voice of Gert Frobe in Goldfinger, yet his wonderfully skilful and powerful vocal performance is uncredited - and must be one of the finest uncredited performances ever in any major feature film.

Michael Collins’ perfectly precise phrasing and intonation immortalised the lines of Paul Dehn’s and Richard Maibaum’s brilliantly clever and witty screenplay which actually improved upon the book …

Celi was fluent in several languages, but his thick Sicilian accent meant that he was usually dubbed when appearing in English language films. For example, Robert Rietti provided his voice in both Thunderball and That Man from Rio. However, in the 1981 BBC serial The Borgias, in which Celi played Rodrigo Borgia, his accent was not dubbed and he was criticised for being unintelligible and hard to follow.

Robert Rietti, "man of a thousand voices" has dubbed hundreds of actors over the years and all the big names in Britsh and European cinema ranging from a few lines of dialogue to whole performances. He is not usually credited on film but I spoke to him on the phone last year while researching a piece for this site and he kindly sent me his resume which made startling reading! As well as voicing Largo in the Bond film he also voiced Tiger Tanaka in "You Only Live Twice". I guess that gives an idea of his range of accents! He made a point of mentioning that it is he and not Charles Gray, as many people incorrectly believe, who provided the speaking voice for Jack Hawkins in his later films. Gray voiced Hawkins possibly twice, Rietti provided his voice for at least 12 films. Rietti even dubbed Orson Welles' whole dialogue for the 1970s version of "Treasure Island" and dubbed much of Christopher Plummer in "Royal Hunt of The Sun" His list of credits is endless but are rarely seen on screen. Very talented man.

Well no, Bacall denied it at first, but now admits he sang some of the top notes.

From memory, I think the reason was that the producers had Greene play the part with an American accent, then when filming was completed thought better of it. Presumably LG was unavailable to redub the part, so Patrick Allen was called in.

So can we work out which films Charles Gray did for Hawkins? I'm no expert, but I'll start by guessing Shalako and Great Catherine.

What other glaringly obvious dubbing jobs have we come across ?

Charles Gray (of Devil Rides Out fame) of course dubbed Jack Hawkins later on when poor Jack was unable to speak, but who dubbed Todd Armstrong in Jason and the Argonauts, and why ?

Makes you wonder what the bloke with the voice looked like, so that he didn't get the part, but also what Armstrong's real voice was like - I know he was in other movies, including The Man with the Golden Arm, but can't remember what he sounded like.

I remember seeing a dubbed version of Bertolucci's 1900 when it first came out, where Burt Lancaster had been dubbed into Italian and then subtitled in English - extremely weird, as the voice they used sounded more like Charlie Drake !

This movie was shown on ITV several years ago. The dubbing was atrocious.



If the movie is released on DVD, subtitles would be a preferred option.

1900 has been out on DVD for some time. I think its subtitled (but you can check Amazon for the print details).



Hammer used to dub actors and actresses frequently, sometimes on no better grounds than the fact that they were unavailable on the day in question to loop their voice (too expensive to have them back separately!). This seemed to have happened to Ewan Hooper on Dracula Has Risen From the Grave. Other dubbing casualties are Ingrid Pitt, Yutte Stensgaaard, the Collinson twins and Mike Raven. Whilst in Rasputin a coachman (played by someone I don't recall) speaks with the voice of Michael Ripper.



James Bond films are another one in which a lot of the European actors/actresses are dubbed - Ursula Andress in Dr No and also Claudia Auger in Thunderball are dubbed by the same person and David de Keyser's voice can be heard instead of Gabriele Ferzetti in OHMSS. Gert Frobe was dubbed as well as is I believe Adolfo Celli to.
