Just watched a clip of Carry on Girls where Valerie Leon's voice is dubbed by June Whitfield, made me think if anyone could think of any other examples. The only other one I can think of is Glenn Close for Andie MacDowel in Greystoke ( if only she could have replaced her through out her career!)

    Any more?

I was thinking how much he sounded like Patrick Allen while watching it last night, but not knowing what Leone Greene's voice sounds like thought no more of it.

In Carry on Spying Dr. Crow played by Judith Furse had her voice dubbed by John Bluthal (who is still acting) into a Peter Lorre soundalike......

In Singin' in the Rain, Debbie Reynolds's character dubs the atrocious speaking voice of Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) when the latter has to talk 'posh' in the movie they are making, The Dancing Cavalier. However, the 'cultured' voice we hear is actually that of Hagen herself, not Reynolds! Furthermore, it seems that some of Debbie's songs in the film were in fact dubbed by one Betty Noyes!

Jack Hawkins had his voice dubbed in his latter films, because he had had throat cancer.

The entire cast of "Gregory's Girl" redubbed their own voices with Standard English for the American release of the film. The Region 1 DVD has both soundtracks.

I spoke to Lysette Anthony in 1983 who was understandably peeved that in her first feature film, KRULL, her entire performance was over-dubbed with the voice of a 30 year old American actress. Fortunately it didn't seem to hamper her career much.

And in the same film the great Michael Hordern revoiced the character of M. Treville as played by French actor Georges Wilson.

Wouldn't go as far to say they dubbed their own broad Glasgow accents into standard English but they did dub their voices into what is called a posh "Morningside" Edinburgh accent. Think Maggie Smith in the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, totally wrong for a bunch of kids from Cumbernauld!

In the film Royal Flash, Henry Cooper, playing posh John Gully, had his voice dubbed.

The excellent David Niven whose voice was dubbed by "AMERICAN" Rich Little, who did an appauling job plus he also tried to imitate the voice of Clouseau. Blake Edwards sure had some weird ideas.

Gert Frobe in Goldfinger was dubbed because he couldn't speak enough English so that it could be understood. NO Mr BOND - I EXPECT YOU TO UNDERSTAND ME.

Paul Danquah, who played Jimmy, the black seaman in A Taste of Honey, returned to Ghana when filming was completed. He came back to London for the premiere and was amazed to filnd that his entire performance had been dubbed by someone else. Tony Richardson never told him why.

I just found this Trailer for The Devil Rides Out on youtube and it has Leone Greene's original voice...only a couple of lines but it's interesting as I can't fathom why he needed to be dubbed in the first place:

Likewise Adolfo Celi as Largo in Thunderball - I have no idea who did the dubbing, but I'm sure I've heard the same voice and "European" accent in several other films of the 50s & 60s, The Silent Enemy being one.

Thanks to Google I've now come up with the name of the actor who did the dubbing - Robert Rietti (or Rietty). This is from Wikipedia:

Celi was fluent in several languages, but his thick Sicilian accent meant that he was usually dubbed when appearing in English language films. For example, Robert Rietti provided his voice in both Thunderball and That Man from Rio. However, in the 1981 BBC serial The Borgias, in which Celi played Rodrigo Borgia, his accent was not dubbed and he was criticised for being unintelligible and hard to follow.

I sit here and marvel at all this information. Do you all actually READ the bits that come with the DVD? I do feel a bit cheated, yes cheated that all those voices were fakes.

I bet if I put Chinese martial arts films and Bert Quark in the mix I must score a hit somewhere
