Today's New York Times ran an interesting article on the cover of it's Business Day section: "Weakening DVD Sales Make Hollywood Studios Nervous" by Brooks Barnes. I'm sure it can be found on their website, sorry but I don't know how to post/paste. In a nutshell it stated that with a few exceptions DVD sales are down and that this Xmas sales season is a "make or break" scenario for Blu-Ray.

Is anybody buying much of anything Stateside at the moment? The stores are getting edgy down here in Florida. Circuit City and CompUSA have gone under, I'm hearing Borders may get bought out...

I find myself reluctant to shell out big bucks on DVD boxsets as they invariably half their price within two years of release. Then there's the joy of Netflix thru-the-mail rentals which are damaging the sales market.

I don't think Blu-Ray is in any danger this year, next year should be more important.

Not enough people have those nice wide screens yet to even appreciate Blu-Ray. Still with players now available for under $300...

theDigitalbits.com made an observation that studios are hurting the medium by putting out vanilla movie discs with none of the extras that the DVD's have, which is dumb.

Weary I feel too on the fringe to consider my habits part of a larger trend. But I thought it interesting that Blu-Ray was not a "done deal"success wise. the NY times article also pointedk.jyhglkmi jh7ytr5dsw3zsedwsc /

I do worry that I am helping in the killing off of my high street. I would never buy a new DVD from a store until I have checked the price on the net and I know the City Link driver almost as well as the postman as our seasonal buys are almost 100% internet originated.

There is a huge switch in shopping habbits happening.

As far as the gross number of DVD purchases are falling, this may be explained by the switch to digital TV with loads of channels to fill and cheap digital recorders, really good rental companies and, here at any rate, the second hand DVD and games shop appearing and don't forget public libraries.

The CompUSA store where I live is closed, the Mervyn's stores are all closing, the economy is really bad right now. I don't know what else will be closing but that's the latest news from across the pond here.
