However well made a fim is, whatever the artistic merit, there are not too many movies that can be repeatedly watched. Ones that would be much thumbed if a book are not necessarily high in the critics esteem.

I am an avid collector of British police and detectives on screen and is my first love, BUT there are certain films that I watch repeatedly and why?

Errol Flynn's Robin Hood is one of mine, Where Eagles Dare is another and The Longest Day. Ah! I am beginning to recognise action films, but then there is Singing in the Rain.

What about your dog-eared DVD's? Title is interesting but the reason would be fascinating.

I feel the same way about Flynn's Robin Hood, my all time favourite!

The Great Escape despite many viewings is another that I never tire of.

Lots more, mainly Action films, The Vikings, The Magnificent Seven etc.

The Ealing Comedies. The Will Hay films. So many.....!

If ever I turn down the opportunity to re-watch any of the following, you'll know it's time to switch the life-support machine off

    The Adventures of Robin Hood

    The Lady Vanishes

    It's Not Cricket

    Kind Hearts and Coronets

    The Captive Heart

    Whisky Galore

    Millions Like Us

    The Way Ahead

    The Wizard of Oz

    Night Train to Munich

    A Girl Must Live

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp

PS dpgmel - aren't you confusing this thread with Most Depressing Films Ever Made ?

These are titles where I had to make an early replacement (VC to DVD)

    Tinker,Tailor, Soldier Spy

    Smiley's People

    Titfield Thunderbolt

    Brief Encounter

    OH Mr Porter

    Most of Alan Parker's work

    Several Powell/Pressburger Titles

So far, I've not worn the DVDs out ..............I need time

I'd agree with The Good Captain regarding:

    Whisky Galore

    Millions Like Us

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp

    and add

    A Canterbury Tale

    This Happy Breed

Naturally, failure to respond to the following would mean I was already beyond the help of a life support machine!

    The Snow Goose

    Walkabout

    The Railway Children

    At Dawning

I'm tempted to add The Railway Children to my list but not if if it means cutting It's Not Cricket... I don't recognise At Dawning at all, Fell, except I see it has A Certain Actress in it and it's a short What's it like?

It's an astonishingly good short, the best I've ever seen [not that I'm in the slightest bit biased, of course!] - the fact that A Certain Actress is on screen for about 90% of it may have helped

It's so short that saying almost anything would spoil it but in the final scene when the "escaping woman" goes home in a taxi, Jenny says not a word but her face expresses the whole gamut of emotions and I find it incredibly "arousing" - which may or may not be a euphemism!

Most of the shorts on the dvd are pretty good but none gets close to At Dawning.

At £17.99, it might be a tad expensive for most people as it is just a collection of a dozen shorts but I considered it worth every penny just for At Dawning - and I think it was £24.99 when I got my copy.
