...who this actor was. Anyone like to take a guess?

Murdered at age 53 and starred in a film by an up and coming director who would become critically acclaimed.

I cheated... so I PMed Clitheroe with the right answer rather than spoil the thread.

Dian Fossey was murdered at 53 also... That's a future birthday to watch out for. I'll stay locked up in my home for that year.

I remember reading in his obituary that he something of a reputation for being argumentative and being generally bolshie. I think he picked a fight in a bar and sadly came off worst - much worst.
