I thought the casting of this happy breed was pretty good. I think Bram stokers `Dracula` was terribly miscast apart from Winolda Rider. Keanu Reeves with that accent, as discussed on another thread, was the worse the member cast though

Even though it's a favourite film of mine I have to say that This Happy Breed (1942) was totally miscast (apart from Stanley Holloway). Most out of place was Celia Johnson desperately trying to be a working class housewife.

Phyllis Calvert and Patricia Roc as mother and daughter in Madonna of the Seven Moons!
Henry Fonda in "War and Peace." Ouch! LOL
The obvious one would be Dick Van Dyke as a Cockney in 'Mary Poppins' but he's still well-loved for the role and was obviously chosen for his singing and dancing skills.
But, much though I love (a pale) Natalie Wood, I think she was seriously miscast in 'West Side Story', especially as she couldn't sing and was dubbed!
Maureen O'Hara and Alec Guinness as daughter and father in Our Man In Havana![]()

That's still not as bad as Alec Guinness blacked up in A Passage to IndiaOr Flora Robson blacked up in Saratoga Trunk. Or anyone else blacked up (except Fred Astaire in Swing Time where it's a homage to Bill Robinson so it's OK)
It's not really Hitchcock's fault but it now looks very odd to see Leslie Banks as the smuggler in Jamaica Inn, Aaaarghing as if his life depended on it, while Robert Newton is the smoothie customs officer hero.
Alec Guinness as a Japanese businessman in "A Majority of One"!!!![]()
Of Mice And Men
1939 Burgess Meredith & Lon Chaney Jr ---- Perfick
1992 John Malkovich & Gary Sinise ---- Embarassing

Yes but Robert Morley played it in the West End. Talking of Morley, he was not the ideal casting to play the Emperor of China in Genghis Khan - you can see in certain shots he wearing flannels and loafers under his costume !
In "Carry On up the Jungle", Joan Sims plays Terry Scotts mother, despite the fact he was three years older than her
Marlon Brando as a gentleman from Okinawa in Teahouse of the August Moon.

A Kid For Two Farthings
Johnathon Ashmore as a little cockney sparrer with a public school accent.
Dirk Bogarde and a few others in 'The Singer Not The Song'. Tan makeup and leather trousers does not a mexican make!

I think the cast of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy show how perfect the original radio and TV cast were.
Martin Freeman is good, and Bill Nighy does well, but EVERYBODY else is wrong.
The great pity is that somebody seeing this film, without knowledge of the radio/tv/books, might never know how good it was.
It may be interesting to see who HHGTTG fans would like to see cast in a new version. I think David Mitchell would be ideal as Arthur Dent. Johnny Depp would BE Zaphod.

Like with most new versions, I would much rather that nobody bothered with a new version but just re-broadcast the original radio version. As you say, that was just about perfect.
The TV version was interesting for its use of graphics to show the book. I had to watch every episode about 3 times just to read it all
Most of the cast weren't perfect, but weren't too bad. But Zaphod's second head was seriously bad
Steve
John Wayne as Genghis Khan must rank up there with the classic miscasts.
There was also a film or TV series where David Suchet played a Chinese person but I can't remember its title.
Ryan O'Neal in BARRY LYNDON
Gerald Butler in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
