Default Producers and actors

Some people have favourite Actor's and some producers, what do you watch how many watch a film with their favourite actor in it although you know it is rubbish and same with producers. Have you soley watched a film because of somebody that's in it or somebody has produced it.

Yes indeed, several entries in the Maxwell Reed collection being the most obvious.

I have favourite actors yes, don't really have favourite producers but have favourite directors, I tend not to watch films I think are rubbish regardless of who is in it or who directed, for example I really like watching the films of Michael Caine and there are a few of his films which are truly awful and I just don;t watch them. eg "The Killer Bees" "Bullseye" " Jaws The Revenge" actually the Jaws sequel with Caine must rank as being one of the worst films ever made, truly awful but Mike was enticed to do that for a big fat pay cheque.

'Jaws The Revenge' was one of the most successful summer movies of '86. 'The Swarm' is no worse than other '70s disaster flicks - 'Meteor' & 'When Time Ran Out' are arguably worse. 'Bullseye' is a real stinker - walked out of the flicks after 10 mins - but was directed by his best mate Winner and starring his other best mate Moore so I can see why Caine was attracted. Thing about Caine is - he never sinks to the level of the film and is never less than competant. A true professional or might just lack the imagination to realise he is in a turkey.

I think Caine went through a phase in the eighties of accepting certain films pureley on the basis of how much dosh he was being paid to appear, Im pretty sure he has the intelligence and imagination, not to mention the experience to recognize a trash script and film, I mean the title alone "Jaws The Revenge" speaks volumes about the type of film that would be.....

Absolutely! I'll definitely watch anything Jenny is in and almost certainly anything Helen Mirren is in.

All the best

I like his response when asked if he'd actually seen Jaws - The Revenge. "No, but I have seen the house I bought for my mother with the money I got paid for it and it's magnificent."

Must have been a very grand house in a very posh area of London. Accepting a movie role in order to buy a house for yer dear old mum is a good a reason as any! Good on you Mike!..

I liked Michael Caine's version of how he became a 'star'. He said ... after 'Alfie' I accepted every offer that came my way, my reasoning was that I would become really famous before they found out I wasn't very good, but if they did find out, I would have enough money not to worry about it. Fortunately, they didn't.

With directors, you can get to a point, when you know somebody's work, that even their bad films are of interest because you can often see their trademark approach, and see what attracted them to the film and how it MIGHT have worked...it's interesting rather than fully satisfying, but it does enhance the pleasure of an unsuccessful film to know something about it. GONE TO EARTH, for instance, is pretty much a failure as drama, but it's beautifully made, and being able to relate it to Powell and Pressburger's other work is a help in appreciating it's real virtues.

Gone to Earth isn't a total failure. It's popular with people who like that sort of "Mills & Boon" type of story. And it's very popular in France where they know it as La Renarde (Foxy lady? )

Powell's worst film (IMO) is The Queen's Guards (1961). Thankfully not shown very often. I think the worst P&P film is probably The Elusive Pimpernel (1950). And that's not so much because of the film itself but because of the rows between the backers (Korda & Goldwyn) and the compromises P&P had to make to satisfy them. It could easily have been a much better film

It's very hard to be a Patrick McGoohan fan and not grin at this one.

Rubbish is such a tough word though. McGoohan has appeared in some staggeringly disjointed films, that much I will concede......

It's part of what makes him so interesting of course. I also find it interesting to wonder why some movies work so well and then others, with stellar casts and competent directors become so fragmented. I often find films (not just McGoohan's) that work really well for about half an hour and then just seem cobbled together any old how, as if they ran out of time and just had to finish the thing.......

Do producers/directors/editors sometimes just accumulate loads of footage and then try (and fail) to make a movie out of it - like a jigsaw that they forgot to keep the box for, and so don't remember exactly what the picture was supposed to look like??

I know what you mean, you would think a film that had Peter Sellers, David Niven, Orson Welles, and Woody Allen to name a few would be good, but not apparently not, I am of course refering to the 60's version of "Casino Royale" I would say even good actors and big stars can't redeem a terrible script and bad direction.
