I like to choose my own software. I don't like bundling, whether by Apple or Microsoft.

I use Windows XP, IE and OE... but otherwise I pick all the software I work with... and tend to steer clear of Microsoft in those choices.

Try Firefox instead of Internet Exploder and Thunderbird instead of Outlook Express. It all helps to break Micro$oft's monopoly

After using Firefox I would never go back to IE now (I alway preferred Netscape anyway). If Microsoft cannot sell Vista they have to ask if there is any point moving on to Windows 7. They ran out of steam with ME, and Windows XP only really won out because its NT platform offered something fundamentally better.

mmmm.... I choose the best software and operating system for my needs, irrespective of manufacturer. By co-incidence those choices happen to come free with an Apple logo on them. I also have the choice to spend £200+ on Office etc....

I tried Firefox a little while ago and didn't like it. I've never tried Thunderbird though...

I don't tend to rate Microsoft software, but I don't mind them having their profits... Doesn't Bill Gates support several charities? He's not all bad... so long as MS Word doesn't put the vastly superior WordPerfect out of business.

I haven't said otherwise. I may boycott Currys and PC World... but I don't boycott any software companies. Its just that, apart from Outlook Express, Internet Explorer and Access... I don't rate Microsoft software.

All I said was I don't like a company bundling software if I buy some hardware.

Do many here have Vista installed? I had a peek at the site logs and only 12% of visitors are using Vista.

I've just ordered a new system and when it came to OS' it was either Vista or XP Pro... so as perverse as it sounds I went with old faithful.

My son bought himself a new PC from Holland last year with Vista on and he loves it.

I got the old one with the old XP on - which was still quite a step up for me (from Windows '95)! At the rate he changes them, I'll be on Vista in about 2012 - so I'll let you know what I think of it then!

I work for a local weekly newspaper, we have Macs all over the place and one tears ones hair out at the sheer inefficiency of the software at coping with various usage by reporters and typesetters and front office staff gathering in advertisements - I get home to my lovely old PC with lovely old XP Pro and IE and Outlook Express and give it a big hug cos I know what it all does and how I can cope with it if it goes huffy and crashes!
As far as Vista is concerned, I have a newish PC with Vista on it and so far it hasn't given me anything in the way of large probs - good Mahjongg game too :)

That sounds like the Macs could be badly set up then. They are very popular in magazines and newspapers because most people that use them find them to be a lot better than anything from the Micro$oft stable

Very wise Steve ! I've just built myself another pc - this time an ultra quiet V.F.M. special for playing video media.

I also decided to buy Vista 32bit premium £57 to "have a go" (and for MS's Media Centre. )

Vista is REALLY annoying ! Very few of my old programs work with it , and whenever I try and do some "I'm-a-computer-techy-person-I'll-just-mess-with-this-setting" sort of thing , it says "oooh ! - was it really you who started this proceedure ? - Are you sure ? !!! - "That's VERY NAUGHTY! Stop it at once" - ACCESS DENIED - CONTACT YOUR COMPUTER ADMINISTRATOR - which would all be fine ; but I AM the computer administrator !!! - - - - Just wait 'till I see Bill Gates.

I quite like the aero look of Vista, and Media Centre is good - except for the powerful and unforgiving abillity to DELETE my priceless video from a touch of the remote control, and I can find no option to disable it. (help) - (I sometimes SIT on my remotes and endup pressing all the buttons at once, so this is a real hazard for me!)
- I'm currently using Vista for internet access.

Thankfully I had a legit copy of XP from my old(broken) laptop - so installed it as a dual-boot - works fine.

I'll persevere with anything I can find to run on Vista, for educational purposes, but if you want some "legacy" style functionallity - I'd advise XP for now.

ps - this pc runs XP superbly - really swift and stable - and so cheap !! I needed it to be good with Pinnacle Edition (video editing) as this is my bread and butter.

DB7, you won't regret your choice. I bought a new laptop last summer, which came with Vista pre-installed. Vista just isn't ready for Prime Time--it's pretty, I'll give it that, but in terms of functionality, it leaves a lot to be desired. A lot of software isn't compatible with it [programs like Nero and Websweeper, which I use on my desktop, won't work on Vista].
The worst thing about it, for me, is the annoying and intrusive security setting. You can't make a move without a box coming up asking, 'did you start this action, and do you wish to continue? Finally fed up, I disabled the security--after that my e-mail notifier and remote software weren't working, and I had no choice but to enable the security again. Sometimes I feel like my laptop has been hi-jacked by Microsoft.
I have XP on my desktop, and am happy to stay with it until the corporate suits at Microsoft get their act together.

Well, I bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium installed. And you know what, I actually prefer it to XP. I haven't had any major problems with it and SP1 will be released in Mid March which should address some issues people have been having. If people prefer XP then fine, horses for courses I suppose....
