I realise I could have just been unlucky and bought a box of dud discs. They are Verbatin +RW so I would have expected better than 2 out of 10 to be OK.

I'm wondering if it's the Panasonic playing up. Its a DMR-EZ45VEBS, and it very much has a mind of its own and behaves in many unaccountable ways.

I'm reluctant to, but I suppose I'll have to buy a new disc and see if that works-unless anyone has any ideas?

.............I've done disc-cleaning, used a disc which cleans the lens.....even read the manual!

    Suasananduic,

I have the same DVD/Video combi as you. I can finalise any -R or +R DVD disc and they will play on any player but if I finalise a RW disc (regardless of manufacturer - and Verbatim are one of the best) it will not play on any other player. It jjst comes up with an inaccessible folder. Also, if I try to copy it to another disc via my PC it comes up with a disc with a folder that can not be accessed on other players.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

I had similar symptoms which turned out not to be the fault of the discs but the drive. Once I'd replaced my DVD writer, the discs started "working" again.

    Hello, Sippog,

I'm really glad to hear this. Even if it doesn't work for me in the future, it's a ray

of hope for all of the 25-30 won't finalise, won't play, etc. dvd-r and dvd+ discs I

have accumulated over the years and can't bring myself to toss in the dustbin.

    Hope springs eternal.

It has been mentioned many times before on this forum that whilst some people seem to get on OK with Panasonic recorders they seem to be generally more than troublesome and I certainly would never buy one again in the future.

I used to go along with the idea that if a company produces good TVs, that their DVD players must also be excellent. Panasonic get brilliant reviews for their TVs and I would recommend their sets to anyone. BUT I would never ever get another Panasonic DVD recorder or indeed anything of that nature - Blu Ray etc etc.

As it happens I have had problems with all the DVD recorders I have tried. So far I've had LG, Phillips and Panasonic, with all being problematic to some degree, but Panasonic being by far the worst. The problems all seem to come from disc recognition, sometimes they like certain brand discs, the next time they don't. Plus they will play some bought DVDS and not others.

I now use a Humax HDD and export anything I want to record onto disc via a USB stick. I am now firmly convinced that PC/Mac DVD authoring, recording and editing is much more reliable than using standalone recorders and the failure rates in my case back this up completely.

My panasonic dvd combi has taken to turning itself off whenever it feels like it.I dont rely on it thankfully so i am mustering up the courage to take it to be repaired wondering if the cost of repair will be worth it.

I know the feeling. And while DVDs are easier to store, they aren't the promised miracle format. I love my trusty vhs tapes, some of which are 25 years and still

have a clear image and excellent sound. Plus those cases were built like tanks back then vs. the flimsy ones now. Not all vhs tapes remain super clear and the sound can begin to fade, but they didn't need finalizing and on the whole, they did their job well.

Now, many younger viewers don't have a vhs player, wouldn't touch a vhs with a ten foot pole (too bad!) and tapes are getting hard to find in stores. Thank heavens for online stores that still carry them but at a higher price.

    Cheers,

In case it helps anyone in the future (specifically me in case I have any senior moments)...........i'ts a bit longwinded but using Windows Help () I hope I've solved the problem.

Placing the blank dvd in the laptop and from the automatic menu selecting "burn to disc",after naming it, formatting took place. When I put it back in the Panasonic the message that it needed formatting reappeared but this time it worked!

It recorded OK but I've only tried one disc so far.....it may be a fluke and would have worked on the 8th or 9th try anyway............................ if this is the case I'll report back!
