Default DVD region change

I have used up all possible region changes on my laptop in the case of watching dvds and it is now fixed permanently in Region 2.

Does anybody know how or if this can be changed to Region 0...vis-a-vis the code inside the machine? I have an Advent 8111 laptop.

DVD drives within computers often have a limit to how many times the region can be changed (often only something like 7 times). I have heard there is software that can override this, but I understand it carrys some risk... and I don't happen to know the software in question.

If it was a proper PC rather than only a laptop... I would have said get several DVD drives and set them to various regions - I did this once and it worked great.

I don't think a computer DVD drive can be changed to Region Free (0).

Use the VLC Media Player instead of Micro$oft's one. The limit to the number of times you can change region is built into the player, not the drive.

How do you change Region with the VLC player... I've just opened mine (which I got very recently) and looked... I couldn't find a Region option.

That's because it doesn't need one. You just play!

Presumably you'd have to set your computer to open VLC as your default player then. I'm just too much in love with PowerDVD to do that.

Try a small piece of software called DVD Region+CSS Free. That'll do the job nicely.

You do not need to set VLC as your default, but you can if you want. Just click on your traffic cone, then File->OpenDisc->choose DVD (menus) or DVD (no menu)->OK

Or when you put the next DVD in it will probably ask what you want to do with it. You can set the default player then.

I tried various things when I first discovered this "limited number of region changes" problem. I found VLC to be the easiest. It's a good player, as good as any other, and it just totally ignores region coding

Indeed, but if one doesn't wish to change one's existing player (whatever it may be), a tiny piece of software running unobtrusively in the background is a very fair alternative.

I have had a look at this, Steve, and it looks to be the cat's whiskers. Unfortunately it will not work for a Mac. Do you have any ideas, please?
