A proposed energy-rating system put forward by the Australian government could mean that many of today's Plasma television sets could be banned from use in the future.

A report commissioned by the Australian federal government warns that most makes of Plasma and LCD televisions would fail proposed energy rating systems as they use more power than standard tv's.
The report suggests "minimum energy performance standards" being introduced which would eliminate the worst performing televisions.
This would mean that all current Plasma TV's and most LCD TV's would be withdrawn from sale before 2011.

Manufacturers would be expected to develop and introduce new technology that would meet the proposed government energy guidelines.

With many other countries around the world also expected to implement similar consumer energy ratings it looks like many of today's modern televisions could have a short shelf life.

Aye they do get warm, but I've saved so much space getting rid of that massive plastic dust trap. My idea for carbon offsetting is that the Brits all have flat-screen colour tellies whilst the Aussies have to use b&w bakelite tv's.

I couldn't do without my big plasma TV now, the old sets seem so small and old now so to hell with the Goverment if they ever banned them here.

Oh good, that means lots of cheap plasma TVs should appear on the second hand market

I'm stocking up on filament light bulbs in case anyone is silly enough to actually impose a ban on them - as has been proposed. I have energy saving lights in most places in the house, but even the most powerful ones aren't as bright as a 60w filament bulb and if you try to read under one you'll strain your eyes.

All these things should be looked at with a modicum of common sense rather than just jumping on the bandwagon.

Well it gives the lie to 'green issues' when David Cameron says he wants to divert 'green' tax revenues to, "help families".

So where did the green imperatives suddenly fly off to then Dave ? I thought they were planning on banning flying anywehere (except for political summits, of course...)

Not lately! Is it just me, or does a 42" TV just sound too big? I'm not sure if I ever want my living room dominating by the TV to that extent.

Depends on the size of your living room, I suppose. Our living room would struggle to take much above our current 32" set. But if I plonked something in the extension....

All this talk about screen size reminds me of an amusing anecdote by Kenneth Williams that he recalled in a 30 minute profile of his life and career called "Comic Roots". He spoke about how, in his youth, his father ran a Barbers' shop in London and was one of the first in the neighourhood to own one of those small squarish valve-type TV's that took ages to warm up....The punters were impressed with the size of the screen (quite big for it's time) and his father used to say proudly "You've got to have a 12-inch console"; to which his mother would then rather saucily add "12 inches should be enough to console any woman"!

I am not going to lower the tone by commenting about Carmel and her 42-inch special...

I'm as mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!

Don't forget the implied "If we ever get into government" which most reports forget to mention. The reports, and the politicians talk as if these things will actually happen. But until they become the government they're worthless claims and just a lot of hot air (appropriate).

When the opposition does get into power they usually forget all the promises they've made and do everything differently.

I have large living room its 15 foot by 14 foot and high ceilings so it suites my room well although my house was built in 1775 so i dont think plasmas came to mind then.

I used to stay in a cottage that had no electricity as a child, just oil lamps and candles to read and play games by, great it was to, lots of spooky shadows on a cold night!
