If you've got Norton then it's safe to turn off any updates to do with the .NET framework and other security updates.
But there are other updates which they still send which patch other errors in their buggy system and applications

Have you got XP SErvice Pack 3 installed on your pc Rose? If not that could be causing your problem. To check right-click on "My Compter" and it will tell you which service pack you are using.

This might solve your problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100

It is slightly different problem, but it gives instructions for removing your .NET framework and reinstalling it (METHOD 2). I suspect either one of your .NET files are corrupt which is interfering with installation or Windows Update is not installing it properly, so if it is one of those problems removing it and reinstalling it should fix your problem.

Maybe for additional MS software (such as direct X security) but not about the operating system itself

Yes I was talking about the task master not the processes tab, but IIRC
on XP you can can switch off things that start up when Windows starts up just by unticking it. which may or may not be in the process tab I cannot remember but you may be able to verify.

Obviously if something is starting up at the same time as Windows and running then it cannot be updated and just goes into loop mode.
