Really looking for free programs if possible and not 14 day trials etc otherwise the cheapest best there is around, can anybody help me please as I've got a few projects I wanna start on, many thanks in advance, Jim

Oh you mean screengrabs or screencaps!

I do this in quite a Luddite way using Windows Media Player, Word and InfanView (free download) just because it works for me but I'm sure I'm unusual in that ...

Try the VLC media player. That lets you take a snapshot of whatever you're playing

I just pause the film on my PC, press 'PrtScn', then open and edit in 'Paint before saving it.

I used to use VLC on my old machine, but I recently got a new PC which doesn't like it - and I've tried to download it several times; it doesn't seem to be compatible with 64-bit software.

That's what I do. I've often wondered if you get better quality using the other methods suggested. Has anyone ever done a comparison?

I've used VLC in the past and can't see any difference whatsoever.

Also, if you use 'PrtScn' and 'Paint', you can lift screencaps from Youtube and any other videos on the Net.

    Like so:

Raymond Mason in the English language-learning series Follow Me!

To save you the trouble of going from Ptr Scr-Alt Gr-All Programs-Accessories-Paint-Edit-Paste-Copy To-My Pictures, Jim (Marmalade Skies), I recommend that you sign up with Picasa, which you can download via a Google search. All you have to do then is simply hold down the 'PrtScr' (Print Screen) and 'Alt Gr' (Alternative Graphic) keys and the image is immediately saved to your computer. This can also copy web pages.

Good luck, Jim. Maybe one day we'll see some of your screencaps from Hunter's Walk, now that we know it's going to be released. Take didi-5's advice and use the Windows Media Player for best results.

Thank-you once again for taking the time to help me out guys, I will take the advice, yes, one of the (many) projects I'll be working on is now and then shots from Hunter's Walk once it comes out. Really can't wait for that, I've not seen an episode since its repeat run in 1977, since then I've been trying to find out more info on it frequently hitting dead ends
    Thanks again guys, Jim

I am a complete technophobe, as anyone in here who knows me is well aware, but I found out quite by accident how to capture still shots from a DVD.

When I play a DVD on my lap top, a camera image appears at the bottom of the page. I freeze the film and then click on the camera image. I then go in the "My Pictures" file where a another file appears called "Movie Snapshot", and there are any photo's that I have taken from the DVD. If I can do it, believe me anyone can!
