Before yesterday, I had never dared ask this for fear of ridicule. However my Brother and his wife asked me the same question and without prompting, so here goes.
We have noticed on some occasions, that the "Favourites List" on our PC's can lose the odd favourite without any action on our parts. It is possible to restore the list by way of a system restore, but have any of you noticed this happening and can you explain it.
We use AVG 2011 as protection and scanning the PC never turns up any results.

There are lot of webpages about it and how to get them back again - but nobody seems to know why it happens, other than it could be a bug on IE.
I've been using different versions of IE for years and haven't had this problem, but many seem to lose new Favourites when they close their browser - and regain newly-deleted ones as well!

Have a Google - there's a lot of info available.

Use a decent browser like Firefox instead of Internet Exploder which is full of bugs and security holes which make it the target of almost every spammer and hacker.

I've been using Firefox ever since it started and I have a very complex collection of bookmarks in multi-level folders. I've never lost one of them :thumup1:

Can't say I've ever lost a favourite from IE - but I do export my favourites list every once in while and store them on a flash drive so that if I change computers or the disk dies - I'm safe.

    Here's how
How to import and export the Internet Explorer Favorites folder to a 32-bit version of Windows

I find it VERY slow and it isn't compatible with everything I access on the Net - I really don't like it at all.
    I have IE9 with Windows 7 64-bit and it's excellent.

Apart from all those lost bookmarks/favourites, and all those hackers that exploit the security holes in it

Have you tried any others, like Google Chrome, [url=http://www.apple.com/safari/]Apple Safari[/i], Opera or any of the many others that are available.

IE really is quite dangerous to use. If you haven't got into serious trouble because of it yet, then you've been lucky. but will you continue to be lucky?

You're the only person who seems to try and frighten people about it! I've been using Explorer for as long as I've had the Internet (a long time) and I haven't had any problems and I don't know of anybody else who uses it who has either.

I was advised by a computer specialist to use Firefox, AVG and Malwarebytes: Anti Malware ... he removed IE8 and Norton and two viruses from my computer in June 2010 ... he recommended Firefox because of its safety priority ... I've had no problems since installing Mozilla Firefox, AVG (Free) and Malwarebytes: Anti Malware ... I have scores of bookmarks and my computer is now 4 times faster.

Firefox all the way with Seamonkey as a 'spare'
backup just in case! Stopped using Interweb
    Exploder years ago;shortly before MicroShite
actually warned people that it 'might not be
absolutely secure' following some major hassles
in different parts of the world.Besides FF has
some cracking 'addons' that allow a range of
internet activities,at the click of the mouse, and
with no need to install extra programs!

Many thanks , to all who have taken the time and trouble to reply. Having discussed your answers with my Brother and his wife, it seems that we all have IE8 in common. So I will try another browser and see how I get on !!!!.

One of the more common causes of "loosing" a Favorite is often caused by, instead of just clicking to activate the Favorite URL link, the user actually inadvertently/accidently clicks ... AND DRAGS ... the reference link.

Frequently so called "lost" Favorites turn up in nearby folders in the Favorites list, or on the Desktop, or some other place where the mouse click-and-drag ended up, unbeknowst to the user.

*ALL* browsers have a backup option for Favorites/Bookmarks - often called an export function, where the list of Favorites/Bookmarks (depending on your browser) can be exported to a single html file.

That html then can be imported into any other browser Favorites/Bookmarks list, or back into the source Favorites/Bookmarks list as a backup/restore.

You can always update to IE9? which has been out about a year or more now, and is very lean.

You get the impression that Google wants to record everything you ever do and offering a browser like Chrome is 'the Greek bearing the gift'

As for Firefox got bored with it, it seemed everytime I opened it there yet another patch to add.

Mine too....... My computer was snaffled by two monster money-demanding thugbugs in the last year. My *specialist* commented that whilst IE is all that the techies tell you, the main problem is that the hacking community target it because it gives them the highest chances of success of *finding* a victim. His conclusion is that if any browser becomes so predominant as IE is now, in the future, then that browser will become the targetted one. So forget principles and loyalty, it's just about survival in the jungle....

Nothing is safe on the internet - and, even if it is at the moment, you don't know how long it will last. You should buy a good security pack and not take chances.

I have Norton - it quietly looks after me.
