Can anyone explain why DVD's I produce on my Toshiba Combi play on it but not on other machines? The copy has been finalised so shouldn't it work anywhere?

I sometimes have the same problem with finalised discs produced on my Sony combi.
However, when I rip the finalised disc to my hard drive with Rip-It-4Me or DVD Fab 8 and then burn a copy with DVD Decypter or DVD Fab 8 the newly created copy mostly plays fine on other players.
    Any other wisdom on this?

Little comfort but I thought I'd mention it here as well as in an earlier thread I started looking for advice: I have the same problem with some commercial discs (mostly Network) which won't play in my laptop but will play in my dvd player. In your cases, it may have something to do with the idiosyncrasy of the brand of dvd (which gets overridden by the ripping process) or some coding, whatever put in by the commercial company, i.e. Network.

From the discussion, no one could come up with any reasons why Network discs won't play in my laptop. Too bad as that rules out screencaps of the disc.

    Best,

    Barbara

    Barbara,
If you rip the Network DVD does the newly created copy play in your laptop?

    Hi, Edward, :-)

I haven't tried to rip it. I should buy the software and give it a go.

    Barbara,
Rip-It-4Me is free (easily googled) and works with 2 other free programmes DVD Shrink and DVD -Decrypter.
They are older programmes and not supported any longer for upgrades etc. but still work fine with nearly all DVD needs.

    Hi, Edward,

Thanks for that. I'll Google Rip-It-4Me and the two you suggest for burning a copy.

I much appreciate your taking the time to give me the helpful advice.

    Best wishes,

    Barbara

Network DVDs, I believe, are quite poorly authored and that could be why there are problems playing them on laptops.

(At the moment I only have the laptop and a DVD player and am still struggling with my DVD recorder not recognising blank discs ... it is truly annoying!)

Thanks, didi. I'm glad I'm not the only only who can't play a Network DVD on a laptop. Maybe Edward's suggestion will solve it. Good luck with the blank discs.
