Does anybody own a dvd projector.PC world are doing an all in model for £499.Whats the quality like and do you have to have total blackout to view..thinking about one for xmas

Depends on what brand it is. You can pay anything between 300 quid and five grand for a projector and you usually get what you pay for. They seem to come in two flavours: DLP and LCD, both have advantages and drawbacks. The most expensive bit is the bulb, they last a long time but can cost 200 quid to replace. You may also need a screen and definitely a big to biggish room.

I have a budget DLP Infocus. You do need darkness for good results and it's a bit fiddly to set up but it's quite impressive when I do use it and I never regret the trouble. You need to compare it with the cost of a really BIG plasma and decide if it's worth it. Speaking personally, there's something about the "depth" of a projected image on a screen that a tv cant match.

Oh, I thought you were talking about something like a clay pigeon thrower! Sounds as though it could be an interesting new sport - shooting Hollywood Z grade DVDs.

They used a DVD projector to screen A Canterbury Tale for 500 people at Canterbury Cathedral in September. That was back projected onto a screen that was about 20 feet high.

It was superb and even the people at the back said they had a great view. For those of us up front we saw things in it we've never seen before.

But not everybody has as much room as there is in the nave of the cathedral

I bought my daughter a projector/screen set up for Xmas. I have to say the quality is superb, the screen is 8'x4' and the colours and black level are outstanding. It is true that you will need a dark room to get the best from it, and also that you will to a certain degree get what you pay for, but i bought a £500 Epson projector and a £100 Screen and spent up quite big on a Denon surround system with Yamaha speakers.....All that can be said is that my 13 yr old daughter loves it, and so do all her mates!

I've had a Panasonic LCD unit for 3 years. Luckily I have a spare bedroom converted to a mini-mini cinema complete with blackout and coloured lights on a dimmer.
The room is only 8ft wide so my scope screen is 7ft 6ins wide. Will be adding adjustable masking and screen curtains soon.
Digital projection is excellent, used it on our 8 X 6ft screen in a Residential Home without problems. My away from home shows are ususally 8mm or occasionally 16mm.
