PS. Not the most techie thread we've had, is it. Poor thing, but mine own.

Later I shall be asking how to open a door.
Hi-jacked by an old joke that I'm sure we've heard before?

Never mind Jackdaw, some of us took it seriously and you've had some useful answers.

Here's wishing you well in your toils with those pesky DVD cases, while my struggle with the packaging goes on

Cheers

Please, someone tell me - how does their retaining system work??

Yes - the Gideon's Way boxes are about the worst. Some of the other Network programme boxes are OK - Its a pity that such a good DVD producer like Network cannot ensure that their product is always well packaged.

Judging by the comments on this posting I now know there are some other people out there suffering the same problem of removing the discs from the cases.

Well I've found ways to deal with the packaging (knife). I've snapped a DVD before so now take more care though this can sometimes involve growing one finger nail longer than usual, or releasing the disc and turning the case upside down, letting it drop into an outstretched palm.

My final battle is dealing with the white security strip that companies like Moviemars use is that an American thing? This sticks itself with passion to the plastic sleeve cover - a deft knife slice along the top seam seems a good idea but merely makes it a problem of two halves.

I'm a bit psycho about sticky labels - they have to come off wherever they may be. What I can't bear is when they won't come off cleanly and tear off in tiny bits or leave the glue behind.

If I see someone reading a book on the tube and it has a Buy 2 for 3 sticker on it, I sooo want to lean over and peel it off.

Hm, what does all that say about me?

It says that you are a well-rounded individual in the best of order. You are correct in your wish to get rid of the unsightly adhesives.

However, I've just realised why I seem to pay so much for books. I meant 3 for 2 of course.

You're not alone with your "label must die mania" Gazza!
I like to have things in order and used to be seen as just a tidy chap. Then along came Patrick Bergin and his soup cans all facing the same way in "Sleeping with the enemy" and now I am seen as a blooming psycho!

For all us sticker-haters .... buy some stuff called 'Sticky Stuff Remover'. You have to be careful, and it is best to remove the paper insert, but it is great for getting rid of adhesive residue on DVD boxes, including those ones on the top that the Yanks are so fond of.

I bought my bottle from Lakeland.

My principal reason for ditching my DVD boxes in favour of plastic sleeves was the huge amount of space I was able to save. However, it has the advantage that I'm now able to watch my Special Branch DVD's without having to endure that gut-wrenching moment of wondering just how much damage I'm doing to the discs whilst I attempt the Krypton Factor-esque process of trying to extricate them.

I don't wish to go off on too much of a tangent, but I do have a hee-uge issue with the excess packaging that DVD's have always been supplied with.

The only problem with buying items like that online, is that you invariably end up paying more in postage and packing that the item costs.

Apparently, 'Focus Do-It-All' sell it - but, if you have another local DIY shop or superstore, it might be worth a phone call to see if they stock it - or something similar.
If you have a "Kleeneze" or "Betterware" rep who calls, they also sell a sticky stuff remover - 'Betterware' sell their own brand.

I have had a bottle for years - it's very economical - but I find that it does 'whiff' a bit and is inclined to be greasy; I certainly wouldn't be without it though.

DS x.
