I've got a list of links re: multimedia preservation & other other technical issues somewhere, but I can't seem to put my hands on it at the moment. Meanwhile there's an abstract that the National Institute of Standards & Technology issued for librarians called Care and Handling of CDs and DVDs: A Guide for Librarians and Archivists. It's worthwhile reading & pretty much covers exactly what the title says it does, in case anyone's interested.

[Edit: The complete text should be free & available for viewing either in html or pdf format. The cost listed should only be for a paper copy, if you want them to print out a hard copy for you. But you knew that already, so...]

You may be surprised to hear that DVD recorders are only just becoming popular over here.
I'm thinking about getting one but as i know many of our members have been using them for some time, i was wondering if anyone could inform me of the pro's and con's / do's and dont's of using DVD recorders that they themselves have experienced.
Your information will help me decide on if/what to buy.
Are most members happy with their brand of recorder?
Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks chaps!

Dave.
Your posting of the 10th November 2004 Dave regarding DVD recorders.

Now that some time has elapsed since that post and presumably DVD recorders have come down in price, what, in the opinion of those that use them, is:-

1) the best value for money brand, (bearing in mind that you only get what you pay for)

2) and would anyone pay for the extended guarantee?

Need to placate Ollie for my making puerile remarks on this techy forum!

Good morning boys.

I bought a Sony RDR-GX300 DVD recorder about 9 months ago. I got this as it always seemed to get extremely good reviews and come top of the ratings of recorders in the price bracket. I must say I am very happy with it. It does seem to be a little slow loading discs etc. but the recording quality, even on 3hour mode is fantastic. The 6 hour mode isn't great as you'd expect but it's fine for recording thing you don't want to keep (on DVD-RWs). I paid £240 for it. It's compatible with DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW. This model has now been superseded. From this experience I would definitely recommend Sony.
Cheers,
A

Thanks Aenima, that's very useful indeed. I have a lot of Sony stuff and have been pleased so far with them.

I have the Sony GX7 which is a superb machine and can record in most formats (excl DVD-RAM) but it doesn't have the option to be able to automatically fill a disk - for instance if a movie is 2 hours 10 minutes long, I have to set it up for a 3 hour recording! Annoying because obviously quality is being lost by recording longer.

I also have an inexpensive Panasonic E55 - this machine does have this feature, but extremely annoyingly it doesn't have an eject button on the remote, it doesn't automatically add chapters every 10 minutes and you can't go directly to a particular time in a recording. It does have time slip enabling to watch a recording from the beginning whilst a movie is still being recorded at the end.

Basically, before considering any purchase have a list of features you definitely want and find a model which has those features. I don't think there is a machine out there which has absolutely everything!

Cheers sanddevil - will certainly take that on board.

I notice the first few DVD recorders at under £100 are popping up in supermarkets etc now (not multi- format yet!) This can only be good news for the consumer, bringing down prices on more sophisticated models.
I have held off buying one of these machines for years waiting for the price to fall. But still it seems like a minefield to try to get a machine that plays/records all media formats reliably.
Maybe i'll wait just one more year!!

Does anyone experience a nigly problem whilst playing back bought dvds - on reaching a loud(ish) noise like bomb; shouting, etc., the volume reduces slightly for a few seconds and then restores to the selected previous setting. Bloody annoying! Any thoughts techno's please?

This could just be to do with the way they've tweaked the audio for the DVD release Jim, or haow it's split for Dolby 5.1 etc.

As far as I am concerned it's most evident on the DVD of THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, where they quite deliberatley dampened down a number of te bumps and bangs from the cinema soundtrack. Left a lot of the action scenes sounding fairly flat IMHO..

Need more info, but yes, probably something to do with the Dolby AC3 remix. If your disk has 5.1 but your sub-woofer isn't connected correctly (or you don't have one) then you'll lose the noisiest parts of the sound mix.
