The following outfit will help you make your Panasonic SA HT500 multi-region

I have had stuff from them and they have been first-class.

Well we got the upgrade remote and it has unlocked our player. It cost £23.50. So far we have played R4 discs but have yet to try out NTSC R1.

I have read of pc dvd-rom drives, being made 'multi-format' (-/+) by 'flashing the firmware' (something not for the faint-hearted or technically- challenged)but cannot verify it myself.(although certainly, there are many drives available with 'dormant' functions, just waiting to be 'switched on')
Firmware upgrades for 'stand alone' players are infrequent, less likely to offer a 'function-related' upgrade, and are more difficult to apply.
With multi-format players so cheap these days, i would suggest it's not worth the headache!

No go, they replied saying it was a function of the drive itself and nothing can be done about it! Oh well.... Thanks for the url anyway :)

Yes, but what make & model is it? Then everyone else can avoid it.

I had a look at the page you gave the link for and it is for a SC HT 500, not SA HT 500.

The manual which came with the machine is for SC HT500! We had a few movies on dvd-r and when we tried them in this machine, they wouldn't play. Our old player which was either a Sanyo or Sony played them ok.
