I don't know if this will help, and I hope the problem has been solved by the original sufferer.

My Panasonic DMR-EZ45VEBS really hates recording with all discs apart from DVD-RW. If I ever try others I get the U61 message. I've tried dozens of suggestions via google and sometimes they work sometimes not. This afternoon, in this heat I had to try them again.

Today the final solution was to insert my Lens Cleaning DVD. I got the usual unhelpful B****ks on screen but I carried on regardless.

So now, harmony has been restored and the lens is clean for a week or so!

Just another avenue to try.

The sensors are always the first thing to go on a panasonic. My old E55 model has been recording on blank DVD-R's for at least three years since all other discs no longer worked. Not really an helpful answer but it might point you in the right direction.

Troubles with Panasonic recorders may well be due to dirty spindles. See a piece by SaintBaz in club.myce.com where he gives instructions on what to do. It seems to have worked for me. Takes about 30 minutes to clean up if you have a good set of screwdrivers.
