Many free options out there I usually use Media Player Classic, you can download it here:

Download Media Player Classic for Win2k/XP 6.4.9.1 Revision 89 - An enhanced version of Windows Media Player 6.4 - Softpedia

Plays numerous formats and very simple to get a screen grab. Play your DVD or file, pause it. Click on File and from the drop down menu select Save Image you then have a still saved to the chosen directory on your computer

Harbottle,
Loaded this program but an error message came up. It fails to save
the screenshot, even when I alter the renderer method, as directed....

Video - snapshot. I think the default is a .png format, whatever that is, though you can set it to save as jpegs and it it saves in My Pictures in Wndows but you can change that if you want.

When using VLC to run the video
on the top of the screen select snapshot from the drop down menu under video and click. It will take a snap shot and save it to your default picture menu.

I think this is what you are after?

Cool utility for creating preview screencaps from your video files. Skip throughs vids taking pics at the time interval you set, joins them, and can label them with info such as file name, size, play length, or resolution all on its own.
Run image grabber. Click Options and set the amount of rows and columns you want. A setting of 3 to 6 for each is good. Then click Open and find the video you want to make caps from. Then click Save and after setting a filename and location for your image then program will run and save your screencap image to that location on your computer.

Use the link below and hit the free button.

You can take snaps with Power DVD, just click the camera icon. Right hand click to alter functions such as save and size.

Sorry Edward never encountered that problem, probably easier to just download VLC player (which I sometimes use as well). Another really excellent player is KM Player KMPlayer - Download which has even more tricks like recording clips from video etc.
