I've been looking at portable DVD players, mainly to take on holiday and sometimes in the car in preference to a bulky laptop, but I don't really know what make/model to go for or price to pay. I saw a Bush one at Makro for £79, which seemed rather cheap, but the last Bush item I had was faulty from the start (a Freeview box that gave you No View) so I don't want to buy Bush again.

The most important features, aside from a decent screen of course, has to be sound quality through its internal speakers because I don't want to be dragging round a set of plug in speakers with me, and also has to be able to play CDs as well (they probably all do but I don't know)!

Has anyone bought one that they could recommend, and what sort of money should I expect to pay? Has anyone bought one that is pants?

Thanks

A first port of call could be Amazon - they have customer reviews which are often extremely honest about the equipment!

Thanks for the info, I'd forgotten about Amazon. There are loads of models which would suit my requirements, and I didn't realise that some have TV cards installed as well and others you can hook up to a Freeview box as well.

Most seem to be 7" screens though and I think this may be a little too small for two people to watch in a hotel room or something. I've seen a couple of car ones with larger screens and my laptop is a 15" screen, so I will study the marketplace and see what comes along.

You can take a laptop on most flights now in addition to a normal flight bag/hand luggage without paying extra, but if you only want it for DVD and audio use it's a bit of a lumber carting one around!

I recently bought a WELKIN 7" screen player at Woolworths , £99 each , came with bag, 240 transformer , car power lead .etc

Great value , and although I know what you mean about squeezing together, to watch it , it has been fun and not that bad or difficult its been a damn site better than lumping around the ;laptop that we have ben doing ,
battery life from fully charged has been around 2.5 hrs so most movies are fine from the battery, and sound is pretty ok for such a small stereo speaker set up .

been well worth £99 ..

Yes someone else told me about that model so I'll check it out.

Incidently some Powerhouse outlets have got a sale on Portable DVD bags, they're for a Bush model but they look pretty universal. They've knocked them down from £19.99 to £9.99. My local Citroen dealer are also selling in car DVD players that hook over the back of the front seat head restraint for £100.

Meanwhile I will keep trying several models until I find one that grabs me.

The Novatech company in Pompey have some good DVD/TV and audio stuff as well as PC equipment, and I was looking on their site earlier. They do mail order and the address is Computer Supplies from Novatech
