The creative industries estimate that six million people regularly file-share copyright content without permission.
I'm sure that's going to be easy to clamp down on...

Thought I'd provide this handy image of the original 'expert' who thought he could control what was happening in his world. (Well, it makes a change from the BBC hauling out Pete Waterman again - a bit like asking a tyrannosaurus rex's opinion of ipods: you get a dim roaring noise that's completely unintelligible.)

I'm sorry but illegal file-sharing will end the day everyone wakes up to the reality that the internet is already the dominant distribution media and takes full advantage of that fact. The only way to beat it is to do it better - but that will mean wrestling control away from those dinosaurs who cannot see the future. Do it properly and nobody deserving need get cheated of their due.

I dont believe in d loading films instead of paying for them, the problem as i see is that on file sharing networks you cant be 100 % sure what you are getting and some files are riddled with spyware and viruses-same goes for music, the common denominator with both mediums is that you dont get the thrill of handling the artwork unless they come with the same and you have the wedge to print picture dvds and such like.

Sorry to be pedantic but Canute didn't try to control what was happening in his world. The reason he sat by the sea was to prove his advisors wrong. They told him that if he told the sea to hold back it would. He said I will show you how wrong you are. For some reason this is an often told misconception about Canute.

I often have to correct people about that as well. Canute knew what he was doing

Canute, Cnut, Knut, spelling, even of real names, was a lot more variable back then. In fact all the way up to the ere of printed documents, and a bit beyond that. Even Shakespeare spells his name differently on different manuscripts and letters

Back to 'cut them off', I would imagine this could be a legal minefield as ISP's will effectively be doing the RIAA's job for them and the extra monitoring/paperwork will no doubt require that more staff are employed.

But if Billy is booted from BT, what's to stop him going to 02, Tiscali, Virgin, NTL, etc etc.

The film industry would be better served doing away with regional barriers and creating an Itunes for films that pitches them at a competitive price to all territories. If you release a blockbuster in the US first, then stagger it release worldwide over the following months, you're teasing people into downloading it.

Take the Miss Marples with Julia McKenzie - three of them have been shown in Ireland, a fourth has been made and no indication that they'll ever be shown here. Ditto the latest Wuthering Heights - on PBS last week, due here at Christmas. I downloaded it yesterday during The Archers.
