NTSC is a lower standard, with not as much information in the signal as PAL. So it's easy for PAL equipment to lower its standards slightly and display a reasonable picture from an NTSC signal. It's like a stereo radio making use of a mono broadcast signal.

It's harder the other way around though. Most NTSC equipment has difficulty in coping with a PAL signal. Like a mono radio trying to cope with a stereo broadcast. It's usually only the higher end NTSC equipment that can handle it

Thanks Steve............

Interesting that Wolfgang. I must try it out since it is easier than continually changing the region Code on the player.

Fortunately this problem only arises with a small number of discs and these all seem to be region 1

I used to have an old tv that played Region 1 dvds in b/w - I didn't actually realise this for a while until I got a Region 1 colour disc So if you're concerned you could make sure your first Region 1 disc is b/w (or just borrow one)

If you've only got one film on your wants list that isn't on dvd you've got a long way to got before you become a proper completist

I know.........Its not the only film I'm looking for......but its the one that creates a "hole" between the ones I have got.............
I have a terrible tendency to try to buy films, in the order they were released, but as you can see that isn't always possible......................

It's not really to do with region coding, it's the difference between NTSC & PAL

The first few VCRs that could play NTSC tapes (and this was long before DVDs) could only play NTSC colour (or color) tapes in B&W

But that was probably over 20 years ago

Wolfgang I am sorry to have to say that Wikipedia is wrong and that these discs will definitely NOT play on a multiregion player even if the previous discs have been normal region 1 discs.

I know because I have just tried it on 2 different players both set to "0" and a message just comes up telling me that the Region Code does not agree with that on the disc.

So it seems that to get these dics to play, the player must be set specifically to Region 1.

Does anyone else have any practical experience of playing these discs. Time Tunnel is a prime example of discs which will not play on a player set to
Region "0"

Are there any cases of region 2 disks having RCE? If not it still does not hurt to set your player to region 0 if it can still play all your region 2 disks, and occasionally it doesn't play region 1. Worst case scenario you watch it on your computer instead.

I agree it is only a few American discs which seem to be affected and if your
player allows you to change regions at will there is no problem. The PC is certainly an alternative however some PC DVD players only allow you to change the region code about 6 times before it is locked.

It's only the Micro$oft Media Player that imposes that strange restriction.
Even after it has apparently "locked" your DVD player onto a single region, you can still play DVDs from any other region with a decent media player like the VLC player as mentioned in lots of other places on this forum. It's free, it's much better than the Micro$oft player and using it helps break the Micro$oft monopoly

That's a reasonable comment - perhaps - but not quite a straight answer to a straight question. I somehow doubt that those who make it their job to corner the market on DVDs have failed to protect themselves legally.

Thanks Steve for the info.

I often wonder nowadays as to the point in film distributors continuing to put on Region Codes and other restrictions on discs (which includes Macrovision or similar) when they must know full well that it can all easily be circumvented if a person so desires.

It therefore serves no real purpose other than to get people annoyed and there is nothing illegal about playing a Region 1 disc in region 2 if you can find a way of doing so, neither is it illegal to "hack" into a DVD player/recorder.

There are some who say that any region coding is illegal. It goes against the GATT and other international trade agreements. I have no problems about circumventing it or telling other people how to do so.

I'm in favour of proper copyright protection, that's fine. But region coding is just an artificial barrier and should be abandoned.
