Here's the site here;

DVD Player and Blu-ray Player region codes

I had a Cyberhome which lasted a couple of years, now have a Coby, both players were under $30 and easy to reset with a code via the remote control. Plays all my US & UK movies

Rude, antagonistic,tiresome, sarcastic, yet aloof and sensitive.. and those are my good points

It's not region coding that's the obstacle.

NTSC is the video format used in America and Canada. PAL is used in the UK and Europe.

Most recent DVD players and a good proportion of VCR's available in the UK are capable of playing NTSC tapes and DVDs by converting them to a 'fake' PAL signal (often called PAL 60) which tv's can interpret correctly. If your DVD player is multi-region, for example, then it can definitely play NTSC format DVD's.

The USA, on the other hand, doesn't regard PAL (i.e. the rest of the world) as important enough to make this a common feature of standard models. You can buy a DVD player in America that handles PAL but you'll have to seek it out and possibly pay more.

A common confusion is also the difference between Region Coding and Format.

Region Coding is an "artificial" constraint to prevent the sale of (for example) US dvd's in other parts of the world. Coincidentally US dvds are in a different format (NTSC) to dvds for sale in Europe but that has nothing to do with Region Coding as such.

I did a search on ebay.com recently and found a multi region playing machine in the states in answer to a similar question.
They appeared to be available and reasonably priced.

When I lived in Bolton three years ago, I came across a shop that unlocked British region 2 DVD players, so that you could play region 1 DVDs on. It only cost me 60 pounds all inclusive. This was of a great advantage because it meant that could play a number of titles unavailable in the U.K.

you can usually do a search for the specific models online and its a simple process of opening the dvd drawer and putting in numbers which sets the player to region 0

or so I've heard.......

Oh, is that the reason? I thought it was because we are on a different continent.

Thanks for clearing that up.....
