Default Windows Vista Home Premium

As most new computers have Vista pre-installed and so its unavoidable, what are the worst/most annoying-irritating things about it? Or better has anyone anything positive to say about it?

I'm mainly worriied that things like my PowerDVD and (quite early) Elements package will object to leaving XP behind.

I use XP and Vista and I really can say that I have had little or no problems with older software running on Vista.

I use Powerdvd too and it works fine.

Think there are 2 variants, 32 bit and 64 bit. 64 bit is the worst one for driver compatibility with older packages.
I would have a look at other forums. Young miss mallee has it on her laptop and it appears ok but I prefer XP, personally.

The only problem with having an open mind is that others keep trying to put things in it...

When I bought a new PC I paid the extra to have XP installed.

Avoid Vista, it's dead and Microsoft are releasing Windows7 in August (this has an XP mode too).

I dreaded using Vista too but having discovered its compatability mode, almost all of my older programs now run faultlessly.

In ref to DB7's post - so it looks like Vista will become the new Windows ME; and a pile of poo that was too!

I bought my current computer with Vista pre-installed just after Vistas first release – only to find that my modem would not work with it, therefore internet connection lost – not best pleased. I could not find an inexpensive way to get round this so was forced to spend another £70 on a router. It still wrankles!

What really annoys me about Vista is how they changed some of the very basic functionality that I use all the time.

For example, a folder will not (by default) display when a file was last modified - you have to add that option in as a view.

And the search - what did they do to that?

I wouldn't hold my breath for Windows 7 either - it doesn't seem to be that much different to Vista.

I was the same but apparently most modems can be reprogrammed with a software download. So much hassle I didn't bother and like you bought a smart new modem.

Vista is rubbish. I know a number of people who have purchased new computers with Vista pre-installed and they've had nothing but trouble with it.

I've only ever used XP and I've never experienced any problems.

I bought a laptop with Vista pre installed, but after a short while of not being able to run my printer etc because there were no drivers available I reinstalled XP professional and rubbished Vista. Still use XP now.

If you can remember back to when XP was launched it was universally criticised as the worst operarating system released by Microsoft? A few year down the line and everyone just loves it! Vista will be the same I’m sure as the patches and tweaks are already showing. Yesterday Microsoft released Service Pack 2 for vista. this has many new drivers and fixes most of the bugs and addresses other problematic issues.
I have read that some people in the IT world are calling Windows7 “Vista with the holes filled in”

Below is a link where you can download Vista Service Pack2..

Download details: Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five Language Standalone (KB948465)

Start every day off with a smile and get it over with.

True, XP had its deserved criticisms but within two years was the dominant OS over 95/98. Vista has dented XP but the latter is still by far the market leader, and for MS part of the problem is now how to kill off the darn thing.

It'll be interesting to see what happens in August as it would be commercial suicide for MS to retail both Vista and W7 given their similarities.

The sad thing is, the 'XP years' should have provided MS with nearly eight years in which to assemble and perfect a successor, but they cocked it up.

Some of them might be calling it "Vista with a few of the biggest holes filled in"

When have Micro$oft managed to perfect anything, or even get close?
They just rely on a position of market dominance and bullying
