When I've done that before the quality of the stream has been a bit iffy - it's ok for a casual listen but if one wants to archive a prog the quality is way too low IMO. Not sure if it's due to bandwidth issues or some other factor.

oh the memories just came flooding back looking at that pic.....just bear with me while I clean up the mess....

A parallel port dongle.....25 way 'd' type connector as well....

The only problem with having an open mind is that others keep trying to put things in it...

This page suggests that the audio quality of iplayer has been improved (now better than DAB, apparently, which isn't saying much as DAB quality is appalling) BBC iPlayer on-demand radio programmes now at higher quality than DAB

However BBC7 is apparently only available in mono via iplayer (as it is on DAB), so I think my idea of the dongle is still the best solution, as Freeview is the only platform on which BBC7 is broadcast in stereo.

Cheers folks.

Cheers, Mallee - my local Aldi didn't have one on display. I looked in a couple of independent computer shops on my high street, and they had generic dongles with no branding, which caused me some concern about after-sales support. Eventually I bought a Hauppauge HVR-900H TV stick from Comet. After some faffing about with installing the software that necessitated downloading a more recent version from their website, it seems to be working ok. It's certainly more pricey than the Aldi one you mentioned, and those I saw in my local shops, but I'm hoping that a known brand may be more reliable.

Be careful which device you buy as some of the accompanying software is iffy. The dongle I bought from ebay didn't even seem to have a manufacturer's name and the software didn't support recording DAB radio broadcasts, though you could record television. I upgraded to Blaze DTV to find it will only record digital radio at 128k.

There's a little programme which allows you to directly download the Beebs iplayer stream without the DRM crap. Check the forums at radioarchive for details.
