Dvd Copying

I've tried several times copying DVDs without success because afer inserting a blank 4.5GB blank DVD the software keeps asking me to insert a blank DVD 9. I don't don't what this is, the Help files don't mention it and so what is that all about? Does it mean it wants a 9GB blank DVD?

Sam,
dvd 9 is a dual layer disc and has twice the capacity of a single layer one,if a dvd has say, a longer running film,or has lots of extras,this is when dvd9 is used so no compression is needed.

What software are you using? What is the capacity of the source disk - 4.7GB or 9GB? If you are trying to copy from a dual layered disk you will have to use something like DVD Shrink to get the content to fit onto a smaller 4.7GB disk. This will involve either recompressing the movie or removing some of the extras from the disk or both.

Yes, though of course your burner needs to be able to handle dual-layer discs in the first place.

Here's a quick glossay of DVD terms:

DVD5 - single sided, single layer (approx. 4.7 GB)
DVD9 - single sided, dual layer (approx 8.5 GB)
DVD10 - double sided, single layer (approx 9.4 GB)
DVD18 - double sided, dual layer (approx 17 GB)

There's also a DVD14 - double sided with a single layer and dual layer side - but I think this has rarely been used.

The software is Sonic Record Now which came with a Dell laptop fitted with DVD burner.

Thanks for the info I will get some DVD9 blank media and try again.

Do you know for certain that your DVD burner can handle dual-layer discs? What's the model number?

I will check but it's a Dell PC and also I have a burner on my Dell laptop, and they're both pretty high spec.
