Moon & Fleet.
The copying process invariably (Shrink, Decrypter etc) makes the output disc region-free (code 0 or 9). Is that what you're asking?

... or are you saying you have , for example, a region 1 disc and you'd like to make a copy that is region 2 (or some other region)? I've never heard of that being done and have never heard of any software that will do it. Region-free copies will play on any player whether or not it has a region code assigned to it and so that overcomes any need to code it to a specific region. A region free disc solves all problems - it'll play on any DVD player even if that player is locked into a specific region code..

Yes, that's what I meant
I asked, because it happened that I bought a region 2 film on e-Bay which was not supposed to be available in this category, so I wondered if it was a copy or not, anyway I'm glad to have it now
The DVD jacket doesn't precise any region, there's "printed in USA" on a little corner....the disc in itself, on the readable side, has no studio mark....

Some of the US companies, MGM is one, will manufacture discs for the world market and not bother to encode them. The labelling may say R1 but they are, in fact, multi region. Also, a lot of stuff is listed on Amazon as R1 but they are in fact multi-region as well.

Amazon do a macrovision eliminator for about £10...lets you copy from a domestic DVD player to a DVD recorder (not combi units). It will copy Region 1 to Region two if you have a multi region player to play off.

Your main obstacle in copying region 1 DVD if it is done crudely is that it will probably be in NTSC instead of PAL. Most modern TVs can take NTSC signals so you can get away with selling them in region 2 markets. If you have VLC on your computer you can use "codec information" in "tools" to check your resolution. If its resolution is x576 then it is in PAL, and if it is x486 it is NTSC. Also does your DVD use purple dye on its recording side or is it silver? If it is purple then it is most likely copy.

I have DVD Players that do the same thing ... purchased here in North America, the outside of the box says they are pre-set to Region 1 but in fact they'll play anything without any need to hack the region code. They are, in fact, factory pre-set to be region free.

Before buying, here's a good site to check out.
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks
Type in the make and model of the player you're thinking of buying and it'll give you the codes to hack the region setting in that player, or it will tell you if the machine cannot be hacked or doesn't need to be hacked. Most popular models are listed here but as this is a North American site it might not list all available UK makes.

I think model numbers (same machine) vary between the UK, Canada and the US so if even if you can't find your precise model there's probably still a hack that you can use. Most makers use the same firmware in several models. For example, Philips only use about three different sets of firmware in dozens of their players. If you have all three hacks then one of them is likey to work in your model.

Excellent!!! Good to know that some of those hacks can apply to model numbers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Talking Precise technical question (again)

I got a region 1 dvd but my machine doesn't read it. If someone copy it on dvd-R or dvd-RW support, could it be changed into region 2 ??

I think a copy would be region free.....but wouldn't it be easier to reset the region on your machine? This is called 'hacking'.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

I know it's forbiden. Those region codes are stupid, sometimes I wonder why they exist because I do not understand the finality of having different zones .....

Who says it's forbidden?

The manufacturers using region codes is actually of dubious legality because all the countries involved have signed up to various free trade agreements and region codes are an attempt to prevent free trade.

I have a DVD player that ignores all region codes

If you get a 'Cambridge Audio' video machine, they make all their video machines region free.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.
