Sad, but not surprising - try to find an item of comsumer electronics which isn't made in China these days.

The linked article was interesting. Logie Baird gets kind of a bad press in that people concentrate on his early, 30 line designs, but he eventually came up with a working system which had 600 lines.

You're right. And it's not just TV and video equipment, it's the same with photographic gear. Unless it's a camera or lens that costs around £1,000 or more, it'll more than likely be made in China.

Didn't Sony also have a plant in South Wales making televisions? I guess production has probably moved overseas, but up until about three years ago, I had a Sony TV with "Made in UK" stamped at the back, and this lasted for about 15 years or so without failure.

... and the way things are going we could end up with no television PROGRAMMES being made in the UK

Okay - a bit of an exaggeration perhaps.

Would UK people buy a tv set that had the brand FERGUSON, rather than than the actual manufacturer MIKOSOKI * (China) stuck on it ?

[* not a real manufacturer name ! .....]

If so, why ?

The last Video Recorder I bought, back in the 90s, had the Ferguson badge on it. Despite having all the gadgets (6 heads, PDC etc) Dixons couldn't shift it at full price because 'the public doesn't want UK names on its audio visual equipment'. Got a bargain as a result

IIRC the firm HINARI was UK but had the said name to make it more attrctive in the UK market

The only problem with having an open mind is that others keep trying to put things in it...

If I've got my makes right here..... might be another firm..... hotpoint had a factory in Peterborough which they closed and shifted production to Poland. The failure rate of washing machines made there was so bad they had to reopen the Peterborough factory and beg the sacked staff to go back to make machines whilst they sorted out the problems. 9 months later the Peterborough factory was still producing..... As for cars...ever had the missfortune of driving an FSO? Dreadfull does not describe them.

Default A story to mark the passing

TVs were also made in Lowestoft Phillips I think. The manager of the factory gave a management meeting this cautionary tale.
He went to Japan for an international management conference and on the seats in the hall there were cordless headphones, the then latest technology, for the interpretation of the addresses. A speaker mounted the rostrum and started to speak - nothing from the headphones, he took them off and tapped them on his knee and put them back on....nothing. He repeated the process but when he replaced the 'phones a voice said, " He is just bullshitting at the moment, I will start when he speaks on the subject".
Imagine the effect on the teller of this when, as his turn came round, standing high on the rostrum, he observed the dignitaries starting to tap their headphones.
