Hi All,
I'm quite new to this DVD backup-ing and I need to buy a writer and some software to go with it. (PC based) I need to find a dual layer writer and a multi-region one to (as I like to watch foreign films). Would anyone be able to advise me on what hardware would be best or at very least offer the most functionally and which software would team well with that writer to enable me to backup some of the very hard to find DVD I have. many thanks Stu |

As for software, everyone has their faves, and many people (myself inc) use a combination of tools, to backup. here is a good starting point though: http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVDFab_Decrypter Suggest you post again for a more detailed guide to software, once you have your hardware sorted.... Best of British...

As Aaron pointed out you will probably make use of several tools to successfully back up DVD's.
One of the best, IMHO, is DVDShrink. It's available for free download on the web. Apart from removing the copy protection stuff and region coding, it enables you to either re-author a disk, taking out the extras and so forth, or to shrink the material to fit onto a single layer 4.7Gb blank. At the moment dual layer blanks are much dearer than singles. But, as always the prices are falling rapidly. I sometimes use a piece of software called DVD Decrypt. This has the ability to create and burn an ISO image of a disk. I have used this to read some real dodgy disks that just wouldn't play in my player. I have only ever had 2 disks that DVDShrink couldn't handle so I used DVD decrypt which did the job.

We all have are preferences, but i like to use DVD FAB Decryptor to rip, DVDshrink to er, shrink, and the old DVDDecrypt (sadly,no longer supported and becoming difficult to download the final build) to burn the iso file. It's all a matter of trial & error, and you tend to have confidence in certain tools to perform specific tasks...The great thing about these tools, is they are all free!!!
