Default Film clips

I'd like to make a compilation of very short clips from a number of films (for educational purposes) from avi or from DVDs. I tried using Windows Movie Maker, but it requires codecs. I get them and it still won't run.
Is there a simple tool for extracting 10-15 seconds of a film in avi or VOB format?
XMPEG works with Windows Movie maker and circumvents the codec problem, but it seems a clunky, slow solution.

Thanks

Nero is very handy for this, I often use short segments as background video for my DVD menus.

Just drop the file into Nero then click Edit Movie.

There's a button under the screen called Cut. Use this to cut everything before and after what you want (click on the minutes or seconds or part-seconds indicator and use the up and down arrows to get to the exact frame you want) then burn it to your hard drive but don't create a menu.

In the output folder just copy VTS O-1 and delete the rest, thats your clip.

Store it, rename it and when you have all your clips throw them back into Nero and use the Edit section again to add fades, wipes and effects to merge or seperate your clips.

Many thanks for that - I'll give it a go.
