Hi all,

A technical question for you. I was watching the box last night via the gift of the freeview digi box and I had the headphones on with the sound piped through my stereo system when I realised the stereo was non-existent. I then did a back to back comparison with an analogue nicam stereo reception of the same prog. and it was a different world. Big lushes stereo with plenty of space. What's going on? Has anyone else noticed this? Is it a generic digital thing or is it something to do with my digibox (a Goodmans GDB3). Something isn’t right. I be grateful for any help. Are there any good forums that cover this type of tech. stuff.

Cheers,
Ian

Most likely explanation is the audio is not stereo.

A broadcast engineer once explained to me that a digital broadcast signal is like taking a Ming vase, smashing it up into a million pieces, and then sending the recipient just enough pieces such that when re-assembled the illusion of the entire vase is given to the recipient.

M, Do you mean the transmission? The analogue transmission was stereo but the digi wasn't. I checked it back to back for the same prog. I assume my Digibox supports stereo as it has a stereo output points on the back to go to an amp. There is no mention of stereo/mono in the manual at all. The only audio set up option is the language menu. I'll have a look on the Avforum.

Thanks for the help guys.

Cheers,
A
