Default Panasonic DVDR dies after re-tune - just coincidence?

Last night we re-tuned the TV and the DVDR (which also has a built-in freeview tuner).
The model is: Panasonic DMR-EZ25.
Shortly afterwards, I put a disc in to record a programme - but the machine began to make horrendous noises and displayed the message 'No Read'.
The spindle was cleaned with Isopropyl Alcohol and a cotton bud - but that does not seem to be the problem. Could this sudden breakdown be connected to the re-tune - or has the lense simply died? I have had the machine for 2 years 5 months and have recorded hundreds of films with it - but it would be very interesting to know if anyone has any advice to offer.

The retuning is purely tuner software based. it would have absolutely no effect on the DVD side of things.

Looks like an unhappy coincidence.

There's a PDF document here which lists some models (both set-top boxes and DVD recorders) which may have issues - it includes a couple of Panasonic recorders - but I can't imagine it'll cause the problem you described.

I'm not so sure about that Parabdela. Although the tuner is a seperate part of the system it is linked to the DVD in the same way as a graphics card is linked to a CPU in a computer.

It's common for an element of a PC to fail and, as a result, kill the whole system. Although certain parts are unaffected it means that the compatibility is compromised and, unless the damaged or defunct component is replaced, nothing works.

The retuning exercise saw some old models of Freeview box became redundant. The changes to the transmissions will mean that 22,000 older digital TV set-top boxes, including the Daewoo DS608P, Labgear DTT100, and Triax DVB 2000T, will no longer work.

If the retuner in the Panasonic is affected in this way also then it could, in theory, render the whole system inoperational.

My advice would be to dig out the users manual and contact the helpline at Panasonic. If the device has been affected by the retune then Panasonic should be willing to repair it regardless of the guarantee being expired.

What a terrific bunch you are, that's certainly food for thought - so thanks to you all!.
I should add that I took delivery of the unit on the 1st of May 2007 (online order from Laskys).

I have the same model recorder which, coincidently, i also bought in May 2007, retune worked fine for me though! Presumably, you have tried various alternative discs, with the same result?

That's a completely different issue. Those boxes are unable to receive the new transmissions. They aren't "broken".

aaron's experience reinforces my original post.

The machine couldn't recognise whether or not there was a disc in at all. The 'No Read' message displayed constantly all the time the power was on.
We tried a factory re-set, but have concluded that its ability to record has just died!
Yesterday we took delivery of a Freeview LG DVD with HDD : RHT497H and the only complaint I have is that I cannot record digital radio on it at all.
The Panasonic was great in that respect - but I suppose I can download some software and record radio via my PC.
