Amazon UK have a new range of 'basic' electronics essentials, including Blank DVDR discs at 12p each.......is this a good deal/price ? (their P&P is FREE as well....)

i think this is another case of you get what you pay for! me personally i prefer to spend a few quid on a decent quality disc to archive films on, i will only use sony and verbatim as i've never had any problems with them.

Hmmm 'High-quality organic dye on the write side of the discs ensures stable writing at high speeds'. The blurb gushes, but it would be nice to know the maker of the dye/disks, though I think we can guess that at those prices it will not be from Taiyo Yuden! Personally I only use TY sourced DVD-R's now, as over the years I've had a few titles fail to be read on the cheap nasty brands. At @22p each they are worth the extra cost I think.

Bigpockets.co.uk are currently offering 100 Ritek dyed full face printable DVDRs at £12.99.
I've been using them for a while now and would say there's about a 2% fail rate on them which is pretty good IMO. |

I've found Verbatim's Taiwanese discs are fine as I have recordings going back to 2004 and are still perfect, however you will find many of them are from China and India. I'd personally avoid these and I would avoid cheap unbranded discs like the plague. |

I bought a spindle pack of 100 "Red" brand discs from Sainsbury(their own brand I believe) for £11.00 and have had no problems with recording(DVD recorder and computer burner) or with playback.I used to use Verbatim almost exclusively but the price went up.If the own brand items are from a reputable big-name retailer you should be ok as they usually have them supplied by a decent manufacturer. On the other hand if you're offered 200 acme super silvers by a market trader,I would be wary.

I recall reading somewhere or other that the top brands were Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek and Sony. TDK and Maxell were considered average.
When I first bought a DVD recorder back in 2004, I was using Verbatim 'Data-Life', which apparently used a different dye to the current discs they make. I also used Sony's and both these brands were made in Taiwan. I've never had a problem with them. You may find the occasional pack of 25 or 50 discs in a 'pod' that are Japanese, but these will be Taiyo Yuden's with Verbatim or Sony written on them. Strangely enough, the dual-layer discs are made in Singapore. I have never actually come across any Taiyo Yuden branded discs in a shop. I get mine through mail-order and although they are more expensive than the rest, they are supposed to be more suitable for archiving. |
