Default cleaning audio from video clips

In a word i shot some footage of a gig i was at recently and while the picture quality is good the sound is dreadfully distorted cos i was near to the wedge monitors at the front of the stage

Anyone here know of a way to clean up the audio track of the video and remove the nasty distortion ???

Preff the software needs to be free

Any advice most welcome

If you have Nero you could try the audio filters on there, they're not spectacular but I presume your footage is just overloading the bass, Nero may well work.

Audacity: Download is free to download amd has a drawing tool which might help as well as a Normalise feature in the effects section which sorts out your levels with one click. You can also minimise hiss, hum, static or background noise with this software.

Cool

If you've got Windows Movie Maker installed on your PC (I believe all Windows Vista packages have it?), then you can adjust the volume levels, completely remove it or overdub a track of your own choice.

I recently copied this old advert from an old VHS video tape on to my computer. But although the sound quality was very poor, I was able to overdub the actual song used as I have it on CD.

I set it to run parallel with the original poor quality soundtrack, I also set it to begin and end at the same point, plus fade in and out too.

So apart from the general street noise introduction, you now only hear my high quality stereo CD soundtrack playing instead. I couldn't improve the picture quality though, but that doesn't matter.

I've uploaded it to MySpace, because YouTube muted the audio due to copywrite issues: -

I'm no expert, but I'm quite pleased anyway.
