Default Editing VOB files - advice please

I have been recording quite a few late night movies on my LG DVD recorder. The movies are recorded as VOB files. The problem I have is that the most interesting movies are usually on around 2am, so sitting up and starting the recorder at the beginning of the film and stopping it after the credits isn't really an option. This means that I have been using the timer, with the result that the recording usually starts with the tail end of the previous program and runs on into the next one. Not a major problem, but it is annoying.

Can anyone recommend software (freeware or open source hopefully) that can be used to edit VOB files? Or would it be more practicable to convert them to another format (AVI perhaps) and then edit them?

Hi Fran..

You could first rip the movie/s to your hdd with DVD Shirnk (freeware) then edit and save . Then use something like Convert XToDVD it will handle Vob’s . You can even put a few movies onto the one disc with a nice menu, very easy to use.. Hope this helps?

Start every day off with a smile and get it over with.

Fame accurate editing is generally easier in vob (mpeg2) format, and Vdeoredo Plus is an excellent, easy app to use for this, but it's not free. It's also very good for removing adbreaks seamlessly. I'm sure the other options suggested will work fine too.

If you want to top and tail the video and reecode to Xvid at the same time you could use Virtualdub mpeg or avidemux, both of which are free. I'd recommend the former.

I can vouch for VideoRedo Plus. I transfer all TV recordings from my Humax Freesat box onto a USH stick. Then edit using VideoRedo on the PC, the removal of adverts is frame-perfect (unlike with most HDD recorders) plus it makes nice menus.

Agree, VideoRedo is great for the task.

Another frame-accurate VOB & MPEG editor that I like is WOMBLE MPEG VIDEO WIZARD DVD http://www.womble.com/products/index.html Payware, but you get what you pay for.

Cheers,
Robert

Thanks for all the responses. I'll check the various options out in a week or two, as I'm rather busy at the moment and don't have much spare time right now - that and my internet access from home has been slowed to 64kbps because I have reached my monthly usage allowance (I shouldn't have downloaded those last two movies.................) so downloading anything much is a bit of a pain until things go back to normal.

One thing I should have mentioned, as it may have some bearing on the advice given, but I didn't think of until now, is that my recorder is a pretty basic thing - it's not a hard disc recorder, it just records direct to DVD.

I think all the comments made here assume that you are able to copy the dvd (RW?) you produce on your recorder onto your PC hard drive for editing. That might possibly be a problem. Then you'd have to burn a dvd for the recorder to play to the TV. This could also conceivably cause problems.

You may find it's better to put up with the unwanted bits than do all this - unless you intend to archive to dvd-R.

Certainly you could check to see if you can carry out the above two operations successfully (without editing) before proceeding further.
