I'm looking for a new plasma to replace my Panasonic 42PX60. Can anyone offer any recommendations for Panny's 50V10, LG's 50PS8000 or Samsung's 50" models?

I'd recommend you forget plasma and go for TFT instead. Plasma is very energy-inefficient and an old technology that may not be around much longer.

Tesco.com are doing Samsung's awesome 55" LED (not LCD) television for £1800 at the moment.

Don't listen to them. Plasma looks so good, so movie like. LCD looks electric, I just can't watch it. Any LCD you see in the shops is fed with a HD signal, look at SD on it & see the difference. Just take some of your favorite DVD's to the shops & see what they look like on LCD.

The energy thing is sales-talk, designed to make people buy the latest LCD or LED, its an irrelevant argument....unless you are concerned about an extra ten quid per year on your electric bill in which case you would do better to remember to switch off lights, don't fill the kettle to full if you are only making one cuppa and most importantly don't leave any electrical items on stand by as that also eat energy. Plasma is not old technology, as old suggest disposable ,its the first flat screen technology and is still the best for picture quality in the same way that film is still better than digital but many people don't want to accept that fact because we are all programmed to believe that new technology is always better than what went before. If your main concern is picture quality while watching a DVD or a BLu Ray disc then Plasma is way ahead of LCD or LED. Before I bought my plasma I was convinced that LCD was the way to go, that was until I spent several hours in John Lewis testing my own blu ray disc of ZULU on nearly every screen they had, the difference in quality was obvious, plasma being better of course. The most irritating and unacceptable feature of LCD or LED is the motion stutter/shudder whenever the camera pans across a scene or even makes a small movement, this is easily eradicated on a plasma because the refresh rate at 100hz is almost instant so its like watching a cathode ray tv in that respect, LCD or LEDs will never eliminate that glitch regardless of claims because LCD or LED work in a completely different way. If you like to have the prettiest slimline "energy saving" up to the minute technology in your lounge then get a LCD or LED, if your main concern is actual image quality while viewing then get a plasma.

Thanks christoph404, very helpful post, and, seeing as I watch a lot of standard definition TV, plasma's always look better than LCD or LED to my eyes.

I'm looking to replace my 2006 Panasonic 42PX60 with a 50" plasma and, if I had to choose between Pana's V10/G10, a Samsung, or an LG, which would you recommend?

I have a Panasonic G10 42inch, the picture is stunning, I looked at the 46 and the 50 inch versions and they too presented jaw dropping images, I was on the brink of buying the 50" but on advice from the domestic chancellor (my missus) decided it would be too big for my lounge. I would go for the Panasonic 50"Plasma, don't think you can go wrong with that.

I have the 42" V10, its stunning. My only regret is that I didn't go for the 50".

I have a Panasonic 42" Plasma in my quite small lounge, & when I first got it thought I'd made a big mistake. It's too BIG, far too BIG! But it only took me a couple of days to get used to it. Then I started thinking maybe I should have got a 50"!

I have had a Panasonic 42" for about 6 years and it's the best picture I could wish for. The 50" is also stunning.Excellent!

I have a 52" HD Sony Bravia XBR9 that is terrific and it has internet streaming capabilities built-in for on demand subscriptions like Net Flicks, etc. There's also a XBR10 with even more bells and whistles and prices are dropping. You should check them out...

I AGREE WITH THIS BLOKE!

Last year I got shot of my LCD 42"box of tricks and swtiched to a Plasma 50" for 2 reasons. 1/ The blacks are so good which was important to me mainly viewing black & white films. 2/ Better value for money.

In the past I have had Samsung gear but decided not to buy for the new set lat year due to the Korea nuclear weapon testing and the direction money was coming from.

Whatever set you go for it must be your choice. Matey has the right idea to take a DVD with you and get a GOOD STORE to play it for you. Also ask how they have connected the player to the set as I have seen one national outlet using RF before now.
