Question for a friend. Can you re-record from Sky+ to vhs? I know it can be done to dvd so assume it should be just about as straightforward but don't have Sky+ myself to be able to test it.

Thanks

Am I enough of a friend to be allowed to answer?
Or did you mean that you're asking the question on behalf of a friend?
Not that it's a question directed to a friend.

The answer is, yes you can. If you can see the broadcast on your TV then you should be able to record it.
Hasn't the Sky+ box got a built in recorder (variously sized hard disks)?

But if you put the VCR (electronically) between the Sky+ box & the TV, or if you put it on the same SCART chain - in other words, if you connect them all together, then you should be able to record to the VCR.

I can see Sky's PPV movies but I thought they were encoded to prevent recording?

I believe that PPV films are Macrovision encoded.

How are you watching them? Does your TV have to have a special decoder fitted?
If not, then the signal is coming out of the Sky+ box unencoded and can be recorded.

Ah, then again, there's little on Sky I record anyway.

Sorry for late reply - been away all day.

Friend is recording on the Sky+ hard drive but was interested in saving some of them more permanently. From what has been said, it seems that it will be fairly simple. As I say, I know that it is possible to re-record from the hard drive to dvd.

Thanks.

But can you copy a VHS to your Sky+ box?

To save it to the Hard Drive so you can make DVDs from it
was thinking of geting a VHS/DVD/Hard Drive machine but if i can use the Sky+ then i might not need to buy one

There is no need to copy from a VHS to Sky+ box just to make a DVD. Simply buy a DVD-R recorder £70-£350 and connect that to your VHS. You can also copy from your Sky+ to the DVD -although the recordings will not be digital to digital -they will have some negligible loss of quality.

I would not recommend buying a DVD/HDD/VHS combo -too expensive and too inflexible should they go wrong. Plus it sort of doubles up on your current Sky+ machine. Connecting a few scart leads is hardly a challenge.

You can, of course, copy to VHS or DVD, but not from

I asked the very same question on a Satellite TV specialist forum, there is no means of selecting an external input for recording from.
