To return to the subject. Whenever a new idea hits the shops there are always different versions of the same things. I too am afraid of being "Beta-max man" or "8-track cartridge man" (remember those?) and so are quite happy to wait until it settles on one version or the other. The one thing it must be able to do is to play ordinary DVD's. I can't go through replacing them again as with VHS. I JUST CAN'T!!!!!!

I understand they can all do that

Just be careful of the 24-25 fps judder if you only have an 'HD Ready' TV rather than a HD 1080p24 complient TV when playing from a HD DVD!

Default High definition dvd recorders/players

Here in Canada, these machines are arriving to the shops. They are,at this time, quite expensive. Their are two different types available. Before investing money into one of these machines,i would like to see which format survives. Lets not forget the beta/vhs wars some years back. High definition tv is here, but,I will wait and see which format survives.

I think HD-DVD fits general consumer requirements better and for that reason I hope it survives. Now its capacity limitation has been lifted with its triple layer format Blu-Ray does not really have any advantage over it. HD-DVD alternatively with its hybrid DVDs can put HD-DVD and DVD films onto one disc which can be played in normal DVD players (which means you can start buying HD films even if you do not own HD player or TV yet), and HD-DVD manufacturers will be able to continue manufacturing DVDs for those who have no wish to replace their TVs or players. I slightly resent how Blu-Ray forces my current technology into obsolescence.

It seems to me whatever advantages Blu-Ray offers, it is not to consumers.
