Default Excessive DVD Packaging

I realise this practice may be anathema to most film afficianados, but I shall beg the question all the same.....

Does anyone as a matter of routine, or has anyone ever considered ditching the packaging that comes with DVD's and storing them in disc wallets or by some other more compact means?

I used to do this with computer software all the time as the packaging was ridiculous and I was sick and tired of boxes cluttering up shelves.

The reason I'm wondering is that I've not got a lot of space and as much as I love my collection, it's driving me up the wall as to how much space even a relatively modest collection takes up.

It will, presumably, devalue the resale value to next to nothing, but at the moment I'm more concerned about the wear & tear implications of storing discs in close proximity. Also, it's crossed my mind that it may just make my hard-earned discs look as though they came from some less than reputable source.

I'd be interested in any thoughts - whether you consider the idea to be efficient, or, just plain bonkers!!

I have considered it myself but I'd only go so far as perhaps getting rid of the plastic box and keeping the insert filed elsewhere. Any dvd's I burn myself only get put into a paper sleeve.

I keep many of my DVD's in small plastic covers which are then stored in a filing system metal CD storing container. It holds 120 disks and is just the job.
I would prefer to have some of my titles stored in the retail plastic covers with the origional sleeves to make them look more professional but, as you say Cuffy, they take up tons more room. Then you are looking at buying expensive DVD storage racks/cabinets to keep them in.
As long as you are happy with your storage system and can find your titles quickly then thats all that matters. Who cares what others may think?

Dave.

I've started to ditch the jewel cases of my CD collection and store each CD and its booklet in a plastic wallet - saving about three quarters of the storage space needed.
I actually place the CD in the middle of the booklet. I wonder if any long-term damage could result from the disc being in contact with the printed page by doing this?

Interesting to hear the comments - most of which I'm inclined to agree with. Dave - you are absolutely right, who cares? It's inspired me to make a bit of a start on ditching some of the needless packaging.

It also begged a few other questions - like, why did I buy so much stuff that I've never gotten around to watching? And why have I got a full set of CSI Vegas seasons 1-4?

Anyway - I figured that anything I've not watched for 2 years, I probably won't for at least another 2 years anyway, so I've placed them in leftover 'cake tubs' from my DVD-R's and I'll worry about cataloguing them later on.

It's been liberating to watch space dissapearing on the cheap & nasty racking I bought a few years back and, consequently, I feel much better about not hoarding lots of junk I don't need. The big test will come of course when I've made my way to my prized collection of The Avengers - these are no longer available in the UK and I think I'd actually rather pass them to a collector who'd appreciate the glossy packing than just ditch the lot. I've not decided on that one quite yet - however, whatever I do, I'll find something more protective than a cake tub.

There's only one reason I can think to maintain the packaging, and that's for the eventual re-sale when we all have to buy brand new copies of every film. This will probably only happen another 5 or 6 times in our lifetime. ha ha. I keep waiting for the little orbs like Alien David Bowie patented in MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH.
