Default Multi-region dvds

I have a panasonic DMR-EH50 dvd recorder which plays pal 2 dvds. However i want to be able to play a multi-region or 'region 0 coded' (?) dvd. I have contacted my local panasonic shop and they said I have to take the player into their shop to have something added which will cost approx £30. Is there any other way i can change it myself? Can anyone help?

Almost all DVD players will play a 'region free', 'region 0', 'code free' DVD so long as the MPEG video stream was encoded in the player's format, in this case PAL.

Perhaps they're scamming you, or perhaps they're assuming that you want a NTSC-to-PAL converter installed?

There may be an online user forum for your player: that may be the best place to ask about region-hacks & c. But a Region 0 should play without hacking.

I've just done a quick search in Google and found a few possible answers. All of them involve money.

Panasonic DMR-EH50 hack - Google Search

thanks to you both. have just been trying silvershistle's suggestion and found this reply to a hacking forum:

If you wanted a multi-region machine i don't understand why you didn't buy one. You can't hack Panasonics.
I suggest you take the one you have back and buy a multi-region machine.

Does that rule out hacking then?!

Will have a go at nick's suggestion next . . .

to veel03. trying to deal with panasonic is like try to get blood out of a rock,if the dvd is marked 0 for pal countries it should work,it appears panasonic is looking for a bit of lolly. if the dvd says 0 for ntsc countries,it may not work. some o region free dvd's can work anywhere.cheers, ronald larkin

If you read in the comments at videohelp.com it claims your player can be unlocked via the remote:
Panasonic DMR-EH50 region code
