There's a guy here in our Town that has been selling pirates Video's then moved on to DVD's for about 15 years and he has been caught i dont know how many times and he always walks away with a fine, although last time he was caught with £25.000 worth of illegal DVD's and hard porn that had been banned and he had all his assets frozen including his car, house and so forth i just hope this time they have some sense and lock him up, although i doubt it.
Although watching a poor picture quality pirate DVD spoils the film.

Some people just don't like that environment. I think sooner or later they will have to release film simultaneously on all formats: cinema/DVD/download and then cinema attendance will rapidly drop off. They have had their cake and eaten it these last couple of decades in having 2 markets - home and cinema - to sell to but it isn't going to last. I suppose that is why you have directors like James Cameron seriously looking at 3D again.

I would be very surprised if films are released on all formats simultaneously. Cinema audiences are going up worldwide which indicates that people still want to see a film in the cinema. DVD sales are such a nice earner on top of box office take I can't see the big studios going for it. Anything that might reduce their earning potential is a non-starter IMHO.
I am quite upfront by saying that I will quite happily get hold of a 'bootleg' of an old film I cannot buy retail, but will replace it with a retail copy if one becomes available. However, I would never buy a 'bootleg' of a future cinema release, no matter how desperately I wanted to see it, and I rarely go to the cinema these days. I am happy to wait for it to be released on DVD legitimately, after all, it's not that long a wait. My boy wants to see the Transformers movie and I have been offered copies of this film, but I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole. It's out in December, just a few months after it's cinema release. That's surely not too long to wait, is it? Bats. |

DVD sales are more than nice earner - they account for about 60% of total revenue so in that sense cinema going effectively acts like 'previews'. Since there are so many awful films being released perhaps cinema is detrimental to DVD market by putting people off buying them.

A trip to the flicks is still a recreational pursuit so people will go regardless for the experience and night out. I do agree with Wolfy that piracy (and they will become sharper operaters as technology advances) so I can see a narrowing of the gap between cinema and dvds. One mistake is that they dont simultaneously release films worldwide. It's premiered in the US and within days a vidcam recording is crossing the globe via the net ready to turn up at car boots. |
