Hi David, I not really a movie buff unless its to do with Trains.

The transfer co. I used was this co. Home Cine to DVD

As for some advice I also want to do it myself. even though that company was pretty cheap I only got them to do half of the cine reels.

I have recently been given nearly 30 hours of 8mm and super8 cine film which I want to transfer to DVD. I have quite a loyal fan club of vintage steam trains.

If anyone does know about doing cine film transfer yourself then please let me know. I already have several projectors and two types of camcorder but when I try to record them off a screen they flicker like mad

Any help from the old film buffs would be really appreciated

You really need a professional cine film scanner which can synch to the film frame rate for this sort of job. Recording off-screen is never going to work.

The proper method is 'Flying spot' but YOU CAN successfully copy using a cine camera if you change the camera shutter speed (if available) to avoid a sync problem with the projector shutter that causes the flickering. It's not perfect but a good extra option. If it's going onto your computer you'll need a capture card. Once on the PC you can colour correct if needed.

Thanks for the advice guys. This all sounds like lots of money. I think its a case of getting them doone professionally bit by bit. At least VAT is only 15% now, that was SO generous of the Govt !!

I have little gadget. It is small box. It has a small screen and you project the film into it. You set a video camera up to film the screen. When set up proerly it works very well. I can't recall it's name and at the moment I don't know where it is within the house. to tell you it's name. Wether a firm like Patterson made it I can't recall.

I recently had some old holiday footage transferred from Super 8 to DVD by a professional company.

I ended up with two digitally produced DVD's which cost me altogether $320.

Not cheap but an expert job.

My Super 8 films were in good condition but the professionals can repair damaged film and offer excellent editing.

There is always the risk that you may damage your precious film when transferring, unless you have the right equipment and know what you are doing.

    Dave.
