Default macrovison killers

I have recently acquired a much-loved movie on commercial VHS.
Although I merely want to create a dvd copy for convenience ( for some mad reason I have 3 vcrs I don't otherwise need) this tape is macrovision protected.
I cannot even create a recording via my compter - which I though would bypass the copy-protection.
Are any of you aware of any sensibly-priced kit out there which would do the job? I would just like to pass the tape on to another lover of the film before it deteriorates any further.

I hasten to add that the film: Mr Love is no longer available in the UK ( I bought it from the States) and has never been released on dvd. It is one of those little treasures that never caught on at the box office!

"Macrovision Killers" - didn't Tarantino make that one?

No, but seriously, there are plenty of macrovision by-pass gizmos for sale on ebay and on the net. Expect to pay between fifty and eighty quid for the box type that go between two scarts; and avoid the ones that are designed for games.

What model DVD Recorder do you have? It may be hackable.

I'm afraid that its the Panasonic DMR-EZ25 which I have been led to believe is un-hackable - I hope this is untrue - but I fear it may be!

Have a look at some of the user community sites: Panasonic DVD players region free hack now available [Archive] - AV Forums

Also, it's possible to get modified SCART leads that will take care of it.

Default more killers!

Cheers for that... I have ordered a Macrovision Decoder Box for DVD / VHS / pay-to-view from ebay. It was £24.99 - and since my son might have more use for it once I have got my 91 minute recording - he's gone halves with me! : When it arrives - I'll let you all know how successfully it operates.

I use a macrovision-killing lead which I got from eBay, and it's great. However, if, as you say, you've got a NTSC tape from the States, you'll find it hard to get a decent recording onto DVD. Although your VCR will put out a signal strong enough to allow you to watch the film on TV, it won't be sufficient for a DVD recorder. You'll get a 'squashed' image. Get it converted by a professional - they don't charge a great deal.

Thanks for that. My VCR machines are all NTSC compatible - and the newest one specifies this. How about if I record from NTSC machine to PAL and then transfer the PAL recording onto DVD? I wish those involved in the film knew the lengths I am going to in order to preserve their film!

I've never tried recording an NTSC tape onto a PAL recorder - I suspect it wouldn't work. Mind you, give it a shot- I'd love to know what happens!

I have had no problems transferring an NTSC tape to a PAL DVD recorder. My PAL VCR can play NTSC tapes, and it must output the signal as NTSC because my DVD recorder recognises it as an NTSC signal. The recordings are fine, but.....if you have any tapes with macrovision then you will need a gizmo to remove it.

This site has a range to choose from:

I've been using what they call a "Digital Image Stabilizer" for years and it is 100% effective. I've never encountered a signal it couldn't handle. Bought mine about 20 years ago and it's still going strong. All it ever needs is a new battery every couple of years. Works equally well on both PAL and NTSC - tape or DVD. It sits between the two machines using RCA patch cords feeding the video signal in and out while the audio signal bypasses it. The cheaper black-box model that you see on this page is all you need. If these people won't ship to the UK look around. There are several sites that sell them including eBay.
