Renting DVDs

Renting Dvds I don't know if this has been covered before,I have been renting 2 dvds unlimited from Tesco the service has gotten worse as the weeks have rolled by, this last week I received just 3 discs out of a possible 6 !!!!!! when I complained I got a email with a lot of old tosh in it not even worth reading, I promptly canceled my subscription can anyone recommend a better supplier I could try, I am going to go on a few other sites and really rubbish Tesco when I cancelled they had the cheek to ask me if I would recomend them to other people er I dont think so they have it all worked out like a loaded dice game, whatever you do you loose out

I use Blockbusters, not a bad turnaround time but far too many discs are scratched to ribbons and it's extremely frustrating when they pack up midway through.

I assume you are talking about the DVD's that are rented online with the titles then being sent through the mail?

There are a number of companies now offering this DVD rental in Australia but I know of no one who has signed up for such a service as yet.

The companies usually offer a sweetener to get people interested i.e. first month free but I have always wondered how good the service was that they were offering.

I wonder how many DVD's are "lost in the mail" each year?

One American company, IntelliFlix, gets The Worst Ever vote from just about everyone duped into using it. We had our subscription via a Christmas gift, and it was staggeringly bad. But an interesting concept...



This is an 'association' of indie rental shops ("ma-n-pa" shops) that paid IntelliFlix a membership fee, and IntelliFlix's website listed every shop's title catalog. IntelliFlix customers paid a monthly fee, too, and IntelliFlix was essentially getting money from both ends as a website provider. When a Ma-n-Pa Shop employee felt like fulfilling a queue request, they did. They used first-class stamps both ways (about 74-cents total) on a DVD they probably rented for a $1 a day.



Except the DVD had to travel 1-2-3 days by mail each way, plus X days staying at the user's house. So, for less than 30-cents 'profit', the DVD was now gone for a week or more, or lost forever.



Association 'members' quickly realized the scam but, since they couldn't get out of their contracts with IntelliFlix, most of them simply stopped shipping titles. Users end up with queues that are never fulfilled.

Hi choicesdirect are great they are great service and great company to deal with i have been with them for years and i buy most of my DVD on line through these and they are great for rental as well.

many thanks for info, I have had a good look on the net and I cant find another supplier that has the stuff that I want to see!!!!Love film which powers the dreadful Tesco dvd rental also seem to be powering loads of other company's, which cuts the choice considerably and the other smaller firms just don't have the range of dvds the only one that is a possibility at the moment is Blockbuster

well you have been very lucky and I hope it stays that way for you, but it may depend on how you view your films if I get one or two in the post I watch them straight away and send them back the same day, I should have managed to get six dvds a week in the end I was getting just 3 so not a good deal they were just ripping me of I would add I was paying for two dvds at a time and they were sending out one and only sometimes 2, when I complained all I got were automated letters by the way you cant contact Tesco customer services by phone only by email they have already had to give me several credits for failing to send out discs on time and generally mucking about like sending the wrong disc, I would add none of this was the Post Offices fault they always delivered on time so my experience of Tesco is cr***p and I would never recommend them to even my worst enemy if I cant find another suitable supplier then I just wont bother to rent anymore

Amazon have never failed us...once or twice a skipped track but they will credit the account or send a replacement. Very efficient.

Hi,

I have used Amazon DVD rental, they send quickly (when the title is available). They don't seem to check or clean the discs though - occasionally they come smothered in fingerprints, especially popular titles - but I have had none that failed to play after cleaning. More obscure titles usually appear to be new and unused.



A good thing about Amazon is that you can easily switch your rental agreement on and off on-line, thereby not having to pay a subscription when there are no titles you want to rent.



Perhaps the only gripe I would have (apart from the occasional grubby discs) is that they only rent out UK region 2 PAL discs - a lot of titles I would be interested in are only available as US region 1 NTSC (even though UK films or TV series). However, there is certainly a very wide selection of titles available - these can be browsed on the Amazon site, even if you haven't subscribed yet.



Another option is to check out your local public library service - my local service is expanding its range all the time, has most of the latest movies, quite a lot of old TV material, and prices are very cheap compared to commercial rental companies.

Hi Pip I did considder Amazon but there rental package did not suit me as I like to get a film in the post watch it and send it back the same day and hopefully get another sent out the following day !!! a quick update Blockbuster are towing the line at the moment !! but this is the second week of my free trial all rental company's are always on there best behavior at this juncture,at the moment they have performed better than Tesco did in its first two free weeks one can only live in hope

I try to have an incoming/outgoing method but BB can be gits for getting hold of all your discs and putting them in one envelope (to save on postage I presume).

Just clear out your cookies and open up as many accounts as you like,keep your same email address just change your password.

All rental companies that offer unlimited rental packages will operate a 'choke back' policy if your are turning dvd's rentals round very quickly.This is clearly stated in their terms and conditions

this is in fact a very good idea which I must confess I had not thought of , I had not realized that rental company's operated this choke back system bit of a diddle really as they are supposed to be offering unlimited rentals !!!!!! which I find very misleading, the dice are certainly loaded against anyone trying to maximize there rental fortunately I have a list of about 40 rental dvds and once I have watched these I wont bother renting anymore I am not in the least interested in looking at the latest blockbuster !! these days I live quietly in the past

Just thought I'd say that I've been renting 4 DVDs a month from Amazon for a couple of years now and never had any problems at all. Moreover, their cheapest rental package has now dropped in price to £3.99, and having a rental account can get you discounts on DVD purchases.

Just been having a look and they are indeed excellently priced. Do they have a good selection including the Network titles etc? Think I might sign up for a trial.

where you lead DB I will follow !! I have also been having a look at Amazons packages, at the moment Blockbuster have managed to send me 8 dvds on my 2 weeks free trial, but there was a bank holiday in that which caused me to lose 2 discs so it would have been 10 of course you can rent extra dvds along side your chosen package, if Blockbuster dont deliver a good service then I will try Amazon
