It has been a very sad day in the Batcave. Young Batmite asked to watch 'DVD Captain Scarlet' (CGI version - puppet version is 'Video Captain Scarlet'). 'Course you can' says The Caped Crusader.

HOLY BROKEN DOWN HOME ENTERTAINMENT UNIT !!!!!!

The Bat DVD player has gone KAPOW!!!!

HOLY EMOTIONAL DISTRESS COUPLED WITH TEARS

    (the mite was upset too)

The player was a JVC XV-S42 which had given loyal service since 2002. Although it wasn't multi-region, it played everything else ... R2, R0, DVD+R, DVD-R, CD, VCD ... and it was a birthday gift from Mrs Bat.

Can any of you lovely people recommend a good replacement machine?

A young boy patiently awaits ......

I have five machines as sadly some DVD-R and DVD+R disks find some machines better than others to play back. Two are sony DVD players from 2002 that still work fine and now will be discontinued that I made multi region with a oneforall remote control the third is a Sony DVD recorder that I left as region:2 the fourth is a philips that I made mutli region with its own remote and the last or fith is an accoustics solutions that is now also discontinued from 2003 with region change as well as some other naughty features. The bottom line is to check on what you need agains what you can adapt for your own needs like I did!

If you want a replacement DVD as quick as possible and as cheap as possible... nip down to Sainsburies and see if they have any Alba DVD62XI. We bought one for my daughter and had no problems with it (and bought another for my son when he is older).

It cost £17.99 or thereabouts. I've got DVDs that were more expensive than that - lol.

Crumbs... if your nearest store is an ASDA you might be in even better luck... they cost £12.99 there. http://www.asda-electricals.co.uk/shop?i=5344f8d73902d7ec7d88d4e83f8d8670&vp=5&bg=11 4&bp=62xis&bi=0

I know buying cheap is somewhat suspect... but we've had Rachael's up and running for a while now and have had absolutely no problems with it. Yes it is basic... but it would tide your son over until you can get hold of a better one at your leisure... Apparently, there are hacks online that can even make it multi-regional.

The latest addition to my own private menagerie of dvd players is a Compacks DVD6972 Multi-region 2 Channel DVD Player which Amazon practically gives away for under £20 (usually between £16 - £18). I have other players with better sound and more impressive features, but this is perfect as desk top accessory - incredibly small, cheap, acceptable picture and sound quality, and I can watch all my NTSC favourites.

    Thanks for all your replies.

I will have to search out a decent new machine for me when I return to the land of the living .... I am working nights till Thursday (yuk!!!).

In the meantime, a cheapo electrical stall at Snetterton Market have sold me a brand new Starlogic DVD player (still sealed in it's box etc) for £9.99. I have just set it up and, although the picture and sound are not great on our big (but not as big as Aaryk's) telly, it looks and sound fine on our second telly in the spare room. Mrs Bat and Batmite are ok with watching stuff in there while I am on nights.

    Thanks again,

    Bats.

ps - Amazon sell those Starlogic players for £13.

I've never had an LG DVD player... but I really rate LG products. My current TV and the previous one were both LG.

    Just my penny's worth.

Thanks. I picked up a new one off e-bay the same as the JVC one that conked out .... and for under twenty quid. If it lasts as long as the first one I'll be happy. I will need one for the Boy Wonder though at some point so I'll give LG stuff a look.
