I have an LG DR175 DVD Recorder which is over a year old and the guarantee has run out (which is bloody typical ) the problem I am having is playing the discs (wether they be Original or stuff that I have recorded off tv ) .

When I insert a disc I get the message "Cannot play due to the disc Error....."this happens whatever disc I insert but sometimes it will play a disc and then sometimes not.

I have given it a dry clean using a dvd cleaner several times but does not get rid of the problem.

I was wondering if this is a laser problem and therefore it is not reading the discs properly ?

I know it is not the discs themselves as I have tried quite a few of them (around 20 so I know they are not at fault ) I have tried several sites on the net and found nothing about solving this problem any help would be much appreciated as I am at a lost as to what the problem is.

Could be a drive problem. I had this with my LiteOn before Christmas. I bought an internal DVD-writer drive (about £20), and got a friend who knows how to take apart things electronic and 'puter-y to replace it for me (for the price of a curry at the local Indian restaurant). Essentially, all a DVD recorder for the TV is is a computer DVD-writer drive with an added tuner and channel buttons. Inside, the DVD-writer bit looks the same. You may want to check on the user-groups for your machine which model of drive fits best, size-wise.

    Hi

I get this problem sometimes with one of my DVD players but the disc(s) will usually play on one of the other two DVD players that I have amalgamated over a period of time. I also used to have an LG DVD player but that one packed up after only a fairly short time. I contacted LG and they blatantly told me that a repair would be uneconomical so that must have been out of guarantee as well!

I suggest that you buy another DVD player as they can be quite inexpensive nowadays but still keep the LG while it is still 'sort of' working so you double your chances if the other also has a problem.

My best DVD player is a freebie that I obtained via the Daily Express coupon system. The picture may be SLIGHTLY substandard but it's multi-region and will play virtually any DVD. The brand name is 'ALBA' incidentally.

I hope that this helps you a bit.

A general rule is that the laser in the machine gets mucky, and a quick clean will solve the problem.

This is assuming that you can find it once you've taken the top off the machine. The guys at Richer Sounds I was having this conversation with tells me it doesn't look the the one Goldfinger had, but both had solved problems with their own out-of-guarantee DVD players and games machines by this method
