For the two weeks since this announcement, the range of rationalisations remains as broad as ever. Just like Sony bilked (and continues to do so) its competitors with licensing fees over the CD Format Standard, they'll now be given license fees from their competitors for the BluRay Format, for every BluRay disc, blank, etc. Not that Toshiba would have been reluctant to give their format-design away for free either.
The sour-grapes comment from Toshiba saying, "Industry may be overestimating the demand for a new format..." is missing the well-earned opposite point.
I think "the Industry" is underestimating consumer opposition to new formats, to new collections, to new equipment, to new landfills.
